    【录音原文】
Not everybody reads the daily newspaper. People who do not read newspapers are sometimes referred to as nonreaders. Early research has shown that nonreaders are generally low in education, low in income, either very young or very old. In addition, nonreaders are more likely to live in rural areas and have less contact with neighbors and friends. Other studies show that nonreaders tend to isolate themselves from the community, are less likely to own a home and seldom belong to local voluntary organizations. Why don’t these people read daily paper? They say they don’t have the time, they prefer radio or TV, and they have no interest in reading at all. And besides, they think newspapers are too expensive. Recent surveys, however, have indicated that the portrait of the nonreader is more complicated than first thought. There appears to be a group of nonreaders that does not fit the type mentioned above. They are high in income, and fall into the age group of 26 to 65. They are far more likely to report that they don’t have the time to read the papers, and they have no interest in the content. Editors and publishers are attempting to win them back. First, they are adding news briefs and comprehensive indexes. This will help overcome the time problem. And they are also giving variety to newspaper content to help build the readers’ interest.
Questions 1 to 3 are based on the passage you have just heard.
    1. What is typical of nonreaders according to the early research?
    2. What are the findings of recent surveys?
    3. What are editors and publishers doing to attract the nonreaders?

There was a person from the State of Song who was concerned that his sprouts would not grow tall and therefore pulled them up a bit. He returned home looking exhausted and said to his family, “Today I am tired out! I have just helped the sprouts grow taller.” His son rushed to the fields to check the sprouts; it turned out that the sprouts had all withered.
Indeed, few people in the world do not help their sprouts grow. The people who abandon them for seeing no advantage in nurturing them are the ones who do not weed their sprouts; the people who want to help their sprouts grow are the ones who pull them up a bit. The method of pulling them up a bit not only has no benefit, but also injures them.

The reason for such rapid growth in China-US trade is, in the final analysis, the high degree to which the economies complement each other. This neat fit, to a large extent, stems from their differences in economic resources, economic structures and consumption levels. China is the world’s largest developing country with a huge market, fast development and low labor costs, but short of capital and relatively backward in technology and management skills. On the other hand, the US is the world’s largest developed country, big in economic size, with abundant capital, and advanced in science and technology, but the cost of labor in the US is high. These diverse yet interlocking qualities will remain for a long time, and are likely to feature more prominently in the ongoing economic globalization.

    正确答案: B

    【录音原文】
The momentum is building ahead of next month’s G8 summit in Scotland where the leaders of the world’s richest nations will debate what they can do to help some of the world’s poorest. Africa is the priority and the politicians will discuss reducing the debt burden, ending trade regulations which put the continent’s economy at a disadvantage, and giving more aid. Mark Doyle, who’s reported from Africa for many years, looks at why aid is necessary, and why much of what’s been donated in the past has not worked. All around the edge of Africa—along the coastline, near the continents’ ports—are monuments to exploitation. On the island of Goree, for example, just off the coast of Senegal, there’s the Slave House. This was the last place many Africans saw before being shipped off to a lifetime of slavery, in the Americas or, just as often, to death on the high seas. There are many more places like this dating from the three hundred and fifty years or so of the African slave trade. When people wonder why Africa is so poor, they need look no further for the start of an explanation. The end of the slavery was followed by a century of colonialism. Some people argue that colonialism brought limited development—railways and schools and so on—the system was principally designed to turn Africa into a vast plantation and mining site for the profit of outsides.
Questions 5 to 7 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
    5. What will NOT be discussed by politicians during the G8 Summit?
    6. According to Mark Doyle, why is Africa is so poor?
    7. What was the last place many Africans saw before being shipped off to a lifetime of slavery?
