    Media and Current Events
The media can impact current events. As a graduate student at Berkeley in the 1960s,I remember experiencing the events related to the People's Park that were occurnng on campus. Some of these events were given national media coverage in the press and on TV.I found it interesting to compare my impressions of what was going on with perceptions obtained from the news media.I could begin to see events of that time feed on news coverage. This also provided me with some healthy insights into the distinctions between these realities.
Electronic media are having a greater impact on the people's lives every day.People gather more and more of their impressions from representations.Television and telephone communications are linking people to a global village,or what one writer calls the electronic city.Consider the information that television brings into your home every day.Consider also the contact you have with others simply by using telephone. These media extend your consciousness and your contact. For example, the video coverage of the 1989 San Francisco earth- quake focused on"live action"such as the fires or the rescue efforts. This gave the viewer the impression of total disaster.Television coverage of the Iraqi War also developed an immediacy.CNN reported events as they happened. This coverage was distributed worldwide.Although most people were far away from these events, they developed some perception of these realities.
In 1992,many people watched in horror as riots broke out on a sad Wednesday evening in Los Angeles, seemingly fed by video coverage from helicopters. This event was triggered by the verdict(裁定)in the Rodney King beating. We are now in an age where the public can have access to information that enables it to make its own judgments, and most people, who had seen the video of this beating, could not understand how the jury(陪审团)was able to acquit(宣布无罪)the policemen involved.Media coverage of events as they occur also provides powerful feedback that influences events. This can have harmful results,as it seemed on that Wednesday night in Los Angeles.By Friday night the public got to see Rodney King on television pleading,"Can we all get along?"By Saturday, television seemed to provide positive feedback as the Los Angeles riot turned out into a rally for peace. The television showed thousands of people marching with banners and cleaning tools.Because of that, many more people turned out to join the peaceful event they saw unfolding(展开)on television. The real healing , of course , will take much longer , but electronic media will continue to be a part of that process.

The 1992 Los Angeles riots broke out because______.
A:the jury acquitted the policemen who had beaten Rodney King
B:people can make their own judgements
C:video coverage from helicopters had made people angry
D:video coverage had provided powerful feedback

    答案:A
文章标题为“Media and Current Events",而且第一段第一句提到“The media can impactcurrent events."
在第一段第三句“Some of these events were given national media coverage in the press andon TV.”
根据第二段第三句“Television and telephone communications are linking people to a globalvillage , or what one writer calls the electronic city.”

    Love or Hate?

We have saved as a final set of emotions to two most important emotions connected with other people:love and its opposite, hate.Love can be seen everywhere.Yet surprisingly, love has been the subject of less scientific research than other emotions, such as anger and fear. The reason for this may be two fold.Firstly, love is a very complex emotion, difficult to describe and measure. Secondly, unlike many radical emotions, radical love is generally not a problem. Thus less medical attention has been paid to it.
What is love? This is a complex question and requires a complex answer. Love is a strong, positive attraction and feeling for another person or thing. But it is more than this.It also involves feeling of caring, protection, excitement, and tenderness. When two people are in love, they feel drawn to one another;they greatly enjoy each other's company;and they may be sexually attracted to one another.
Sometimes it is easier to think in terms of different kinds of love:romantic love, brotherly love, and so forth.Though they are different in some respects, they share one important characteristic: a strong positive feeling toward another.
Our feelings toward other people are often complex. We may love someone and,at the same time,be angry with him.Or we may love someone, even though we are jealous of him.We mighi even love someone and,at the same time, hate for some precise reason.
Hate is a strong negative emotion toward someone, and is due to anger, jealousy,or some other factor. Like love, hate can be a very strong emotion. It can also be very dangerous. The question is often asked,"Is it bad to hate?"The best answer is probably" sometimes yes and sometimes no." Usually hate does not help us.It makes us feel unhappy and makes us do things that may hurt others. However, sometimes it may be necessary to hate and hurt someone in order to protect loved ones.

Love is a lasting, strong, positive attraction and feeling for another person or thing, the very opposite emotion of which is__________.
    A:anger
    B:fear
    C:jealousy
    D:hate

文章最后一段第一句讲到恨是由于“anger, jealousy, or some other factor”造成的,因此选项A是正确的。

    Save Pandas

With the Switzerland-based World Wildlife Fund(WWF),China is making a concerted and dedicated
effort to save the endangered pandas. The results, officials here in Chengdu indicate, are mixed but encouraging.
A clear disappointment is the failure to breed pandas in captivity, necessary if their decreasing numbers
are to be replaced.Another failure has been the incapability to find a natural, readily available food to replace
    the arrow bamboo.
Despite these failures, success has come on two fronts. One achievement has been the physical rescue
effort. Some pandas have been kept alive by salting(空投)the mountains with tons of cooked meat , which
pandas will eat as a substitute for bamboo, and by the planting of new bamboo in isolated areas.Animals in
some Sichuan areas have been rescued by local peasants and given emergency treatment by animal doctors.
A second achievement is a massive fund-raising effort.Publicity about the pandas plight has resulted in
a new$100,000 emergency allocation by the WWF and independent fund drives both in China and abroad.
In spite of this support, there have been conflicts in the panda relief program. One important problem is
the difficulty Peking is having balancing the recommendations of environmentalists with China's ambitious
goal of agricultural and industrial modernization.
Wolong is but one example of this difficulty. This 494,000-acre preserve was declared a protected area
in 1975.Yet 1,800 people, mostly Tibetans, still live in the preserve, logging trucks still roll down the narrow
mountain roads, and blasting work still goes on at the site of a new 160,000-kilowatt hydroelectric plant just
    six miles away.
This all means that the pandas' fight for survival will not be an easy one, even with the concerted effort of
man.For in the end, even if they can survive the dangers of the wild, they must still contend with man himself.

The tone of the author's conclusion concernling pandas' survival is_______.
    A:worried
    B:optimistic
    C:angry
    D:impersonal

    答案:A
在文章第一段最后一句话“The results, officials here in Chengduindicate ,are mixed but encouraging.”
由文章第二段第一句“A clear disappointment is the failure to breed pandas in captivity,…”
