Practice 2 Many matters, however, are less easily brought to the test of experience. If, like most of mankind, you have strong convictions on many such matters, there are ways in which you can make yourself aware of your own prejudices. If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you subconsciously are aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If someone maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. The most savage controversies are those about matters as to which there is no good evidence either way. So whenever you find yourself getting angry about difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination that your belief is going beyond what the evidence justifies. For those who have enough psychological imagination, it is a good plan to imagine an argument with a person having a different opinion. This has one advantage, and only one, as compared with actual conversation with opponents: this one advantage is that the method is not subject to the same limitations of time and space. Mahatma Gandhi considered it unfortunate to have railways and steamboats and machinery; he would have liked to undo the whole of the industrial revolution. You may never have an opportunity of actually meeting anyone who holds his opinion, because in Western countries most people take the advantage of modern technology for granted. But if you want to make sure that you are right in agreeing with the prevailing opinion, you will find it a good plan to test the arguments that occur to you by considering what Gandhi might have said in refutation of them. I have sometimes been led actually to change my mind as a result of this kind of imaginary dialogue. Furthermore, I have frequently found myself growing more agreeable through realizing the possible reasonableness of a hypothetical opponent.

Some Old Truths to Help You Overcome Tough Times Unfortunately, life is not a bed of roses. We are going through life facing sad experiences. Moreover,we are grieving various kinds of loss:a friendship,a romantic relationship or a house.Hard times may hold you down at what usually seems like the most inopportune time, but you should remember that they won’t last forever. When our time of mourning is over,we press forward, stronger with a greater understanding and respect for life.Furthermore, these losses make us mature and eventually move us toward future opportunities for growth and happiness.I want to share these old truths I’ve learned along the way.41_Fear is both useful and harmful. This normal human reaction is used to protect us by signaling danger and preparing us to deal with it.Unfortunately, people create inner barriers with a help of exaggerating fears. My favorite actor Will Smith once said,“Fear is not real.It is a product of thoughts you create.Do not misunderstand me.Danger is very real. But fear is a choice.”I do completely agree that fears are just the product of our luxuriant imagination.42_If you are surrounded by problems and cannot stop thinking about the past, try to focus on the present moment. Many of us are weighed down by the past or anxious about the future. You may feel guilt over your past, but you are poisoning the present with the things and circumstances you cannot change.Value the present moment and remember how fortunate you are to be alive.Enjoy the beauty of the world around and keep the eyes open to see the possibilities before you.Happiness is not a point of future and not a moment from the past, but a mindset that can be designed into the present.43_Sometimes it is easy to feel bad because you are going through tough times. You can be easily caught up by life problems that you forget to pause and appreciate the things you have.Only strong people prefer to smile and value their life instead of crying and complaining about something.44_No matter how isolated you might feel and how serious the situation is,you should always remember that you are not alone.Try to keep in mind that almost everyone respects and wants to help you if you are trying to make a good change in your life, especially your dearest and nearest people. You may have a circle of friends who provide constant good humor, help and companionship. If you have no friends or relatives, try to participate in several online communities, full of people who are always willing to share advice and encouragement.45_Today many people find it difficult to trust their own opinion and seek balance by gaining objectivity from external sources. This way you devalue your opinion and show that you are incapable of managing your own life. When you are struggling to achieve something important you should believe in yourself and be sure that your decision is the best. You live in your skin, think your own thoughts, have your own values and make your own choices.45选?

    A.You are not alone
B.Don’t fear responsibility for your life C.Pave your own unique path
C.Most of your fears are unreal
D.Think about the present moment F.Experience helps you grow
E.There are many things to be grateful for

Three Ways to Become More Creative

Most people believe they don't have much imagination. They are wrong. Everyone has imagination, but
most of us,once we become adults, forget how to access it. Creativity isn't always connected with great works
of art or ideas.People at work and in their free time routinely think of creative ways to solve problems.Maybe
you have a goal to achieve,a tricky question to answer or you just want to expand your mind! Here are three
    techniques to help you.
This technique involves taking unrelated ideas and trying to find links between them.First, think about
the problem you have to solve or the job you need to do.Then find an image, word, idea or object, for exam-
    pie,a candle.Write down all the ideas/words associated with candles:light,fire,matches,wax,night,silence,
etc.Think of as many as you can?The next stage is to relate the ideas to the job you have to do?So imagine
you want to buy a friend an original present, you could buy him tickets to a match or take him out for the
    night.
Imagine that normal limitations don't exist. You have as much time/space/money,etc.as you want.
Think about your goal and the new possibilities. If,for example, your goal is to learn to ski,you can now prac-
tice skiing every day of your life(because you have the time and the money). Now adapt this to reality.May-
be you can practice skiing every day in December,or every Monday in January.
    Look at the situation from a different point of view. Good negotiators(谈判者)use this technique in business;
and so do writers.Fiction writers often imagine they are the characters in their books. They ask questions:
what does this character want? Why can't she get it?What changes must she make to get what she wants?
What does she dream about? If your goal involves other people, put yourself" in their shoes".The best fisher-
    men think like fish!

The phrase"put yourself in their shoes"in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to_______________.
    A:dress yourself like them
B:do as they ask you to
    C:put on their shoes
    D:think as they would

    由第二段第四句“Write down all the ideas/words associated with...”可知选C。
由第三段第三句“Think about your goal and the new possibilities”可知选C。

Practice 1 Keep in mind this important point in reference to your vocabulary improvement program. If you can personalize your new words, if you can make them bear some relationship to yourself and your way of living, you then materially increase your chances of making these words a permanent part of your vocabulary. You cannot learn words in a vacuum. That is, if a word cannot be made to have a bearing on your life, if it cannot be brought within the circle of your own thoughts, if it cannot be made a part of your own personality or of your attitudes, then that word will remain useless to you.

(1)Two men are sitting in the park, although one of them looks quite young. The older man is sitting on top of the bench to play a musical instrument,a trumpet. He is wearing blue jeans and put his feet on the bench. The younger person seems to be a teenager. He’s playing a guitar. I think they might be playing the same melody together. They enjoy themselves in the music.
ex. He put his feet on the bench.
(2)There are two men in the park who are playing instruments. One of them is playing the trumpet, while the other is playing the guitar. Behind them in the park, there are many people. They are wearing jackets, so it looks a little cold outside there. A woman is sitting on the edge of the park with her bag next to her, maybe she is sitting on a bench. She is doing something.

There are some people sitting near them, but they are so concentrate on the music that they pay no attention to those people.
(4)There are two benches in the park. The two benches have some rings on each end. A boy is on one bench. He is playing the guitar. He looks quite young. Practice 3Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the remark “College students have many ways to finance their college education. They may get help from their parents, find part-time jobs, apply for loans, or win scholarships.” You can cite examples to illustrate your point. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.

Method for College Students to Cover Tuition Fees and Other Living Costs In China, college students should pay for the tuition fees themselves. However, most students have no jobs and the most common way to cover tuition fees is to turn to parents for help. There are also some students who find jobs in the summer before they go to college. In my opinion, the best way is to find part-time jobs.
On the one hand, they are in school all the time, from primary school to high school. They never get in touch with society and need social experience. So, during college time, they can take the opportunity of doing part-time jobs to accelerate experience.
On the other hand, college students can earn money to support themselves. Some students are able to earn their tuition fees and some may not. Even though the money they earn is not enough for the tuition fees, it can cover their living costs.
All in all, part-time job not only can add social experience but also can support college students their everyday life and even tuition fees. It is the best way for them because they can benefit much from it.

Practice 2 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: In countries where there is a high rate of unemployment, most pupils should be offered only primary education. However, others believe that higher education helps people find jobs. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion. You should write at least 250 words.

Being faced with a high rate of unemployment, many people begin to doubt the role or the purpose of receiving education, as high degree is not a stepping-stone to a successful career. Some people believe that a basic education can be enough to meet demands of job market and fulfill the requirements of a person's lifetime. However, others hold an opposite perspective on this issue. As far as I am concerned, unemployment has nothing to do with education itself, which is just not consistent with demands.
First of all, when it comes to basic education, it has at least obvious advantages: On the on hand, it is primary education that establishes the foundation of all subjects one should master, which can be frequently used in daily life. Moreover, only learning from the very basic level, one may have the chance to get to know something deeper in the future. On the other hand, and more importantly, through primary education, one can cultivate his desire and interest of learning. Without the interests in study, it is impossible for anyone to promote himself to higher levels. Like the foundation of a building, primary education is the foundation to build one's life education upon.
Furthermore, further education has its unique benefits: firstly, one can get the whole picture of a particular subject from higher education in college, which can benefit one's life constantly. Secondly, Uplifting one's life quality asks for two important elements: wealth and taste, which can be both gained from further education.. In other words, one can be a comprehensive person, not only learning his major, but also enjoying literature, art and music.
Lastly, it is a fantastic chance to meet and talk with people who share something in common in higher levels of education. Universities are like a stage or platform, on which people can consolidate the friendship they have for one another.

The Balance between Fluency and Accuracy

To be able to speak English with fluency and accuracy is a goal of many Chinese English learners.Fluency can be simply defined as"being able to communicate ideas without having to stop and think too much about what one is saying";speaking accurately means"speaking without errors of grammar and vocabulary".
However, the fact is that many students find that the faster they try to speak, the more mistakes they make. And,when they slow down, there may be fewer errors though it can sound unnatural. So,how to balance accuracy and fluency in spoken English?
It can depend on the manner in which one has studied English in the past.People who tend to focus on accuracy may find that they worry too much about making mistakes. This can make them nervous or embarrassed about speaking English in public. As a result, their spoken English might not improve. This means that, although they know English grammar and vocabulary well, they might not be able to hold a good conversation.
On the other hand, there are those who really like to talk and are willing to try their language out even if they make mistakes. This willingness to take risks helps them speak more fluidly. But,if they make a lot of mistakes,it may make it difficult for them to have their ideas understood.
The debate about which is more important一fluency or accuracy一in the English language has lasted for a long time.Still, one thing is clear:neither of them should be absent if one is to speak a language well. How can we be sure that we can develop both? The following tips could help.
Find the problem. What kind of person are you一one who focuses on accuracy or one who focuses on frequency? The first step is to recognize your problem and go to work on it.Think about situations where you've used English and how you felt about making mistakes?Do you always try some new language even though it might not be correct?Or do you feel embarrassed by mistakes?
Focus on one problem at a time. When you speak English, find the mistakes you make most often. One mistake Chinese often make is omitting the"S"from the third person singular verb.Or you may speak too slowly as if you were searching for the right word and correct grammar. The next time you use English, try to work on those problems you have identified. If it's fluency, try to focus on it.If you have a problem with the third person singular, try to concentrate on when you make such errors.Don't spend time thinking about other mistakes.By choosing an area to work on,you can isolate problems and help yourself overcome them.
Vary your practice. If you go to an English corner or an English club, try to change the types of activities you take part in so that you practice both fluency and accuracy.Public speaking allows you to slow down and be sure you have time to concentrate on the language.Meanwhile, discussions are good practice for fluency, especially if you don't stop each time a mistake is made.
Tell the difference between fluency and speed. Some Chinese think that speaking fast is the same as speaking fluently. In fact, speaking fluently involves not only speed. It also involves stress, pronunciation and intonation. If you make a mistake in these, speaking fast will only make it worse. Don't sacrifice understanding for speed.
Record yourself. Take a tape recorder and record a conversation with a friend or a speech or talk to yourself as you do it naturally!A two-or-three-minute recording is enough. When you've finished, listen to yourself. Can you find out any error and correct it?Make it a regular practice. The more you record yourself, the more confident and natural sounding you will become.

Which statement is true according to the passage?
A:You don't stop each time when you practice your accuracy.
B:You should care about all the mistakes in your speaking all the time.
C:Record yourself for three to four minutes is a good method to improve accuracy.
D:You record yourself more, and you will become more confident and natural sounding.

选择A的依据是第一段最后一句:" speaking without errors of grammar and vocabulary”说话不犯语法错误和词汇错误。这与选项A的内容一致。所以选项A是正确答案。
本题是细节理解题。题干是:在“This willingness to take risks helps them speak more fluidly”句中fluidly的意思是什么?(第四段,第二行)。 On the other hand , there are those who really like to talk and are willing to try their language out even if they make mistakes.”另一方面,有一些人真的很喜欢说话,而且就算说错,他们也愿意试着说。这说明该段主要强调注重流利性多于准确性的人,所以依此推理fluidly是“流利的”意思。另外,也可以通过fluid作为名词液体的意思,借助一些名词加“ly”以后变成副词或者形容词这一常识推理出正确答案。所以选A。
The debate about which is more important一fluency or accuracy一in the English language has lasted for a long time.Still, one thing is clear:neither of them should be absent if one is to speak a language well.”说英语时流利重要还是准确重要,关于这个问题的辩论持续了很长时间。然而,有一点是明确的,即想要说好一门语言,流利性和准确性都不能少。作者似乎提出在文中提出了和题干一样的题,但后面的回答只是关于二者的必要性,而非就二者之间哪个更重要,所以D是正确答案。
本题是细节理解题。题干是:根据本文,哪个说法是正确的? 选择D的依据是全文最后一句:"The more you record yourself, the more confident and natural sounding you will become.”你自己录音越多,你就越有自信,你的英语听上去会更自然。所以选择与原文同义的选项D。
本题是细节推理题。题干是:在进行公共演讲时,谁会感到紧张、尴尬?选择B的依据是第三段的第二、三句:" People who tend to focus on accuracy may find that they worry too much about making mistakes. This can make them nervous or embarrassed about speaking English in public.”那些倾向于注重说话准确性的人可能会发现,他们太过担心犯错误。这可能导致他们在公众场合说英语感到紧张或尴尬。所以,选项B注重说话准确性的人,是正确答案。

  • 第15题:

You live in your skin, think your own thoughts, have your own values and make your own choices.42选?

B.Don’t fear responsibility for your life

D.Most of your fears are unreal
    E.Think about the present moment
F.There are many things to be grateful for

Scientific and technological advances have improved our daily lives. However, in many fields scientists cannot solve the problems they have created themselves. Do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Give your reasons. Write a composition of about 400 words on this topic.

Scientific and technological advances have, admittedly, improved people's daily lives and dramatically changed the way people live. People nowadays actually owe a great debt to the inventors who have pushed forward the development of science and technology. However, I am a strong believer in the claim that scientists in many fields cannot solve the problems they have created themselves, for the following reasons :
The creation of a new scientific and technological product is a purely academic matter, but its application may be affected by political, historical and military factors. For example, the original purpose of cloning was simply scientific—to change undesirable genes at the embryo stage, and to alleviate pain and illness of the patients. However, some people with ulterior motives may take advantage of this technique to clone human genes. This is sure to cause serious moral uncertainty and chaos for the human race. The inventors of cloning might have never imagined that the technology is now used for dishonorable purposes, and they can only rely on the government to prohibit human cloning by enforcing strict laws.
Sometimes it is impossible for researchers and scientists to predict the future application of the product they are working on. Atomic energy is a case in point. Its study and research are conducted with the aim of saving the world's limited energy resources and optimizing the use of current energy sources, such as water. Yet people are saddened by the news that atomic technology is used to manufacture dangerous weapons for the purpose of threatening or even destroying other countries and innocent people. For example, to retaliate Japan's attack on its Pearl Harbour, the United States dropped two atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, causing huge mortality and destruction, which were absolutely never dreamed by the scientists who invented the weapon. And once it was put into military use, the inventors could do nothing to change the fearful result.
In conclusion, scientists in many fields find themselves helpless when it comes to controlling the application of the technology they have labored so hard to produce and to solve the problems they have created.

Directions: In this part of the test, you will give your opinion about a specific topic. Be sure to say as much as you can in the time allotted. You will have 15 seconds to prepare. Then you will have 60 seconds to speak.Practice 1 Some employers value education over work experience because they say it gives employees a more complete understanding of a specific field. Other employers prefer work experience, saying it proves the candidate can deal with real world challenges. Which do you think is better and why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

From my point of view, I think an employer should hire someone who has more experience in a particular field instead of one who receives better education. Employees with more work experience can put practical experience, which they have learned from real world, into current job. Many of the most successful business people have succeeded without the help and benefit of a formal higher education. To some extent, they have been successful through application and experiences, which cannot be taught and acquired in classroom. After making mistakes, even experiencing failure, and then learning lessons from mistakes, employees can learn and grow, and. finally achieve success. So employers should value experience rather than education when deciding between two otherwise promising candidates.
    选择candidate with more experience(经验丰富的求职者)
Successful people without higher education(没有接受过高等教育的成功人士)
    详细说明:(1)application,experience(勤勉,经验)
    (2)making mistake,achieving success,experiencing, failure(犯错误,获得成功,经历失败的过程)
    (2)
Employers should choose a candidate having suitable education to the field or industry, where they are being employed. Education is more important because students are taught certain things in their field, thus they can bring what they have learned to their career. For instance, an accountant is required to apprehend mathematics and the principles of accounting fully, even just to get an entry-level position. Assume someone just has work experience in accounting-related jobs, he might not be lectured the correct way to deal with accounting activities, or he has to waste time and resources to learn on the job. It is better to hire someone who has already acquired profound knowledge and skill set at the very beginning.

There are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who have travelled to the places. Or you can go and see a colour film. Or you can read travel books. It would seem that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective (主观的) account of travels which the author has actually made himself, if they are informative and have a good index (索引), then they can be useful to you when you are planning your travels. The second kind are those books whose purpose is to give a purely objective (客观的)description of things to be done and seen. If a well-read, cultured person has written such a book, then it is even more useful. It can be sorted as a selected guide book. The third kind are those books which are called "a guide" to some place or other. If they are good, they will, in addition to their factual information, give an analysis or an explanation. Like the first kind they can be inspiring and interesting. But their basic purpose is to help the reader who wishes to plan in the most practical way. Whatever kind of travel book you choose you must make sure that it does not describe everything as "wonderful", "excellent" or "magical". You must also note its date of publication because travel is a very practical affair and many things change quickly in the twenty-first century. Finally, you should make sure that the contents are well presented and easy to find. The following travel books may be of use when you plan your travels except ().
    A

the book written by some people who have had the same travel experience themselves

    B

the book which tells you what is worth doing and seeing based on the facts
