Practice 1 As the famous Chinese saying goes, “Above, there is Heaven—below, there are Suzhou and Hangzhou.” An impressive claim, but the only way to find out if Suzhou is indeed one of these two earthly paradises is to actually visit the place. Suzhou sits only four meters above sea level, so water features heavily in the landscape of its canal towns, as well as in the serene classical gardens that have been designated as World Heritage sites. This was immediately obvious on arrival, with rivers and canals crisscrossing the streets on the ten-minute walk from the train station to my riverside hostel. Because of Suzhou’s location near the mouth of the Yangtze, numerous canals were built to stabilize the flood-prone delta areas. Several other towns and cities in the region followed suit, creating what has become known as China’s region of water towns. As well as the countless lakes, 35 kilometers of rivers, and 168 bridges nearby, the Grand Canal is another significant draw. Stretching from Beijing to Hangzhou, it cuts an impressive path from north to south, and brought significant trade to the towns. After a few minutes’ exploration down some of its many back streets, I discovered why Suzhou is often praised as the “Venice of the Orient.” a Aside from the countess picturesque stone bridges peppering the city, Suzhou, like Venice, was once a great trading port, supplying goods from China’s “most productive land.” And during my brief visit I saw many small boats using the rivers to transport goods throughout the city. It’s also the silk capital of China. In ancient times it was from here that silk would have been transported along the Grand Canal to Beijing, and eventually all the way along the silk road to places as far away as Rome. Even today, Suzhou’s silk exports account for 30 percent of the country’s total. With its mild climate, fertile land and abundance of produce, it is no wonder that Suzhou is referred to as “heaven on earth.” Suzhou’s gardens date back as far as 600 AD. These gardens were designed by artists who were hired at the height of the Tang and Song dynasties, and used four basic elements to create a harmony between heaven and earth: trees, water, bridges and rock. With an abundance of water, and stones brought from nearby Lake Tai, it was the trees (the older the better) which were the most prized elements of the gardens. The gardens are not known for their size, but for their delicate design incorporating hills and ponds, terraces and corridors. Suzhou also has a strong tradition of Kunqu Opera, which was listed by UNESCO in 2001 as one of the “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.” A good place to see it is at the Garden of the Master of the Nets, which is also one of the city’s nine gardens to have earned a UNESCO World Heritage listing.

China-US Economic and Trade Cooperation A realistic solution to the increase of US trade deficit with China (solution to US-China trade deficit increase) is for the US to expand its exports to China. We on our part have demonstrated the utmost sincerity and made our greatest effort by substantially increasing imports of farm produce/products and electro-mechanical products from the US, and placing more purchasing orders for needed American commodities. At the same time, we hope the US will recognize that China has the status of a market economy (recognize China’s market economy status), and lift its export restrictions on high-tech products (its restrictions on high-tech product exports). We ardently hope that the relevant US departments will make a clean break with those obsolete (out-of-date) concepts and practices, and throw them into the Pacific Ocean so as to boldly advance/ keep pace with the times.
We for one have full confidence in the future of China-US trade and economic cooperation. The road ahead might not be all smooth sailing, but the prospect is surely bright/promising. Internationally, China-US economic partnership faces a (window of) rare strategic opportunity. A pattern featuring economic interdependence, mutual benefit and win-win, a pattern of each having something of the other, is taking shape. The US economy has started its long-awaited rebound. And China’s economy will maintain a sound growth momentum for a considerably long time to come.

    正确答案: 参考译文
Attitudes towards retirement vary from person to person. Some people think that they will enjoy their time in retirement, but when it comes they may feel a little disappointed. Unwilling to resign themselves to the prospect of being put on the scrap heap, they try to seek alternative outlets for their energies and alternative sources of income that employment can provide. Others have already prepared themselves for the significant change in their lives. Tired out after all exhausting life revolving around work, they are anxious to relax in retirement with all the strains relieved. As there is no more need to rush to catch a morning bus and no more anxiety about promotion, they now have enough time to fulfill an old dream, such as writing, painting, growing flowers and traveling around. On the whole, female workers tend to have a more favorable attitude towards retirement than male workers. Withdrawl from employment to complete domesticity is a far less threatening experience for a woman than for a man.

Support Agriculture We must support agriculture more effectively. We need to adopt measures that conform to the WTO rules and safeguard the interests of Chinese farmers. We should increase investment in agriculture and rural infrastructure to improve production and living conditions in the countryside and the ecological environment there. Emphasis should be placed on support for projects of water-conserving irrigation, drinking water, production and use of marsh gas, hydroelectric power generation, rural road building, and grazing land fencing. Support for agriculture should be strengthened in the fields of agro-scientific research, dissemination of agricultural techniques, prevention and control of plant diseases, pest control, information consulting and farmer training. More effort should be made to aid the mainly grain-producing areas. Financial services for agriculture will be improved. We will deepen the reform of rural credit cooperatives. We need to do a better job of poverty alleviation by encouraging rural development, increasing funding from various sources to aid the poor and expanding programs that provide jobs for people as an alternative to relief. More efforts should be made to aid disaster-stricken and destitute areas through reduction and exemption of agricultural or stock breeding taxes, and this policy should be carried out to the letter. Positive efforts should be made to help families live below the poverty line and families designated for special assistance resolve their practical difficulties.

In the sphere of science and technology related to agriculture, China year-by-year narrows the gap between its performance and that of the advanced countries. The contribution rate of scientific and technological progress to China’s agriculture has increased from 20 percent in 1949 to 42percent. Agricultural sci-tech departments have made much progress in biotechnology, new and high technology and basic research, and the cultivation of plant cells and tissues, anther culture, haploid breeding and the research on its application have reached the world’s advanced level. Bilinear hybrid rice, hybrid corn breeding, and multi-crop planting technologies featuring intensive cultivation have reached or approached the world’s advanced level. In addition, an important breakthrough has been made in the research of making use of the advantages of hybrid beans. Since 1949 Chinese agricultural scientists have cultivated more than 40 varieties of crops, and 5,000 high-yield, excellent-quality and strong-resistant new varieties and new combinations. The varieties of major crops have witnessed four to five renewals. In general, one renewal results in an increase of 10 percent to 30 percent in output. At present, the yield of crops has increased to 4.40 tons per ha from 1.16 tons per ha in 1950, or a growth of 3.8 times.
