You should write 160—200 words on the ANSWER SHEET. Poverty today is a major global issue. Although there are all kinds of definitions used to explain it, in simple words, it means the inability of a person to even get his basic needs of food. shelter, clothing, safe drinking water, health and education. Poverty can be found in each and every corner of the world, although the causes may differ from country to country. Given below are the main causes of poverty in the world today. Overpopulation is one of the main causes behind the threatening of poverty on an individual level as well as a social level. This is simple math. If there are more mouths to feed and less income, definitely much will remain poor. Another theory which is used as an explanation for poverty is lack of education. If you look at any of the underdeveloped countries, you will find that the level of education there is very low. Lack of education means lack of employment opportunities, thus leading to unemployment coupled with poverty in the future. Moving away from one’s own homeland to another city or country in search of employment leads to poverty too. It may take these people a lot of time to find jobs. Meanwhile they live in bad conditions. The cost of living in the city or country is most of the time too high for them. There may be other causes of poverty like the change in business. For example, in America, a couple of decades ago, heavy industry flourished, which employed a lot of African-American people. But now, the focus is more on information technology and health care, both of which employ only skilled and trained people. This has led to unemployment among African-Americans. Poverty has many ill effects on society. That’s why steps should be taken to get rid of it!

Reading Books in Printed Form. or on Computer

The popularization of computer has made it possible to read books on computer. With it, there is much discussion about whether e-books will replace traditional print-on-paper books.

Some people say they like only e-books, which are quicker and more convenient to get and use. To get a needed book, one has to spend much time or money in searching for or buying it in bookstores, but one can just type in the title, author or other related information of the book to find it in minutes on internet. Sometimes one can even read the full content of a digitized book free of charge or instantly discuss about a book in an online forum. Moreover, a lot of information of books can be stored in a small compact disc, which is easy to take.

Other people, however, think printed books are still necessary. In the first place, too much time in front of the computer can cause eyestrain or increase radiation risks. Second, a printed book can be read at your convenience. One can read in bed before sleep or during a boring journey, without fussing with a computer.

In sum, since e-books and printed books have their respective advantages and can complement each other, I would like to combine the two ways to meet different needs. For quick reference, a digitized book will probably be useful. To appreciate a poem or a novel, I prefer the traditional way of reading on printed books.

As can been seen, love between a mother and a daughter is reflected by the drawing:in the left one,a young and amiable mother is holding one hand of her little daughter, while in the right photo, when the mother is aged, her daughter, who has grown up,is supporting her, just as the mother did thirty years ago.Just as the caption below summarizes, the implication conveyed in the picture is self-evident:we need to show our concern and love to our parents. However, most of us fail to do this job.As our pace of life gallops along, increasingly our society is seeing a decline in traditional moral values. It is revealed in the fact that we always put back filial piety. As young men now deem the career as the priority, they often choose to migrate with their jobs, and work around the clock, leaving parents in empty-nests.Besides,many people are used to substituting their care for parents with money or gifts. While it is beyond dispute that material support can improve our parents’living standards, what these aged people need most is company and love from us,such as a simple call,a short time at home.It is easy to draw this conclusion that,to our parents, nothing can be better than the filial piety from children.Whenever possible,we should gather around the table for a“reunion dinner”with our parents;whether busy or not,we need to give our parents a call and tell them we are fine.Only with our full awareness of caring our parents with gratitude can our parents lead a really happy life.三、万能句型1.As can been seen,…is reflected by the drawing:….2.Just as the caption below summarizes, the implication conveyed in the picture is self-evident:….3.As our pace of life gallops along, increasingly our society is seeing….4.It is revealed in the fact that….5.While it is beyond dispute that…,….6.It is easy to draw this conclusion that….7.Only with our full awareness of…can….

    正确答案:
It goes without doubt that promises are ubiquitous in our daily life. We can hear varieties of promises either from TV, newspaper or from other mass media. As is shown in the cartoon, even a hen has learned how to promise. Undoubtedly it is hen’s duty to lay eggs. And the eggs of course contain shell, yolk and egg whites. But now all this needs to be promised.
It is not uncommon to find more such unnecessary promises. For example, to ensure the quality of the goods is the responsibility and duty of a store. However, some stores will stick up a notice promising “there is no fake product here”. It sounds so ridiculous.
As far as I’m concerned, doing is better than saying. All the customers want is first level service. Therefore, more emphasis should be laid on how to improve the quality of goods as well as that of the employees. Only in this way can we make the economy prosper in a more healthy way.

You should write 160—200 words on the ANSWER SHEET. It is all very well to blame traffic congestion, the cost of petrol and the hectic pace of modern lift, but manners on the roads are becoming deplorable. Everybody knows that nicest men become monsters behind the wheel. It is all very well again to have a tiger in the tank, but to have one in the drivers seat is completely another awkward and difficult situation. You might tolerate the odd mad hog, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule. Perhaps the situation calls for a “Be Kind to Other Drivers” campaign; otherwise it may get completely out of hand. Road courtesy is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most levelheaded and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to retaliate when subjected to uncivilized behavior. On the other hand, a little courtesy goes a long way towards relieving the tensions and frustrations of motoring. A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of courtesy helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and tolerance so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such acknowledgements of courtesy are all too rare today. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize courtesy when they see it. Lorry drivers say they have almost abandoned the practice of signaling cars to overtake when the road is clear, because many of the cars took too long to pass. Their drivers couldn't be bothered to select a lower gear. Others, after overtaking, slowed down again and hogged the road. They manufacture them by force, using their direction indicators as a threat rather than a warning. Slanting matches and even punch-ups(打架斗殴)are quite common. It can't be long before we hear of pistols and knives being used: we can then call our dual carriageways, and solve a spelling problem in the process. Driving is essentially a state of mind. However technically skilled a driver may be, he can't be all advanced motorist if he is always arrogant and aggressive.

    正确答案: 【范文】
The given excerpts discuss most drivers on their road are badly-behaved, which results in all kinds of traffic conflict. Therefore, the excerpts suggest drivers must possess a sense of road courtesy. Road courtesy asks for drivers not only to behave good manners, but also to have a good sense. Only in this way can friction be minimized. At last, the excerpts mention that being an advanced motorist depends on whether he has a sense of road courtesy rather than whether he is technically skilled.
As for me, I totally agree with the point of view mentioned in the excerpts. Admittedly, with the rapid development of economy and car industry, there is a constant increase in private cars and taxi. However, it also brings about some negative influences. In order to save time or for personal convenience, drivers turn a deaf ear to the road courtesy. Their illegal overtaking and inappropriate driving lead to many cases of car accidents. To solve this problem, the government has issued related laws to supervise drivers. But what’s more important, it’s drivers’ good sense that matters most. On the one hand, drivers should stay calm when meeting an uncivilized driver. Don’t retaliate. On the other hand, drivers should respond to an act of courtesy, which will help create a friendly atmosphere among the traffic conditions.

The liberally educated person is one who is able to resist the easy and preferred answers, not because he is obstinate but because he knows others worthy of Consideration. —Allan Bloom Assignment: What is one important easy and preferred answer that we should resist? That is, what dangerous misconception do people commonly hold? Write an essay in which you answer this question and support your position logically with examples from literature, the arts, history, politics, science and technology, current events, or your experience or observation.

    正确答案: 【参考范文】
One of the most dangerous misconceptions that people hold today is the idea that our enemies are fundamentally different from us. It is easy, to a certain extent, to understand how such a belief comes about. Most human societies must kill in order to survive, but must at the same time prohibit particular kinds of killing. Throughout our history, humans have been meat-eaters, and so must kill and eat animals in order to thrive (the minority of vegetarians notwithstanding). Also, societies must often defend themselves against violent enemies, necessitating the occasional use of deadly force. On the other hand, civilized societies must prohibit most killing within their own ranks, so that their populations do not die out or suffer needlessly.
So how do humans deal with this dichotomy: the need to kill, at least occasionally, to survive, and the need to prohibit killing within its ranks? Simply, humans have developed the concepts of us and them. It is okay to kill and eat animals because they do not have the value of humans. Perhaps, too, a society may justify the killing of animals by adopting a belief system that says that animals are gifts to humans from a divine being or beings.
In much the same way, humans are inclined to put their enemies in the category of other, that is, less than human, or to believe that a divine being has given them permission to kill those enemies. Paradoxically, those religious systems are also very likely to have severe restrictions against killing other human beings. In practice, most cultures regard these as restrictions merely against killing their own kind. However, this type of thinking is counterproductive to the goal of building more just and functional societies. If one society can easily categorize another as an enemy and thereby reduce its foes to the status of animal, then the concept of universal human rights is abolished.
We see the dangers inherent in denying the humanity of our enemies in the United States today. Although the American Constitution champions the concept of inalienable rights that are due to all human beings, the United States Senate is actively engaged in undermining those rights. The right of habeas corpus, that is, the right of a person in custody to seek a hearing to determine whether or not he or she is being held justly, is a cornerstone of the United States Constitution. It is regarded as a fundamental element of a just society. Yet the Senate is seeking to eliminate that right for foreign detainees captured in the war on terror. In other words, the mere suspicion of terrorism—not proof, but suspicion—is evidently reason enough to reduce a human being to the status of an animal. This heinous distinction of us versus them will surely have dire consequences for the United States, who will rightfully be seen as being grossly hypocritical on the matter of human rights.
Even beyond the trampling of human rights, the us versus them distinction is not even as useful in wartime as it may seem at first glance, because to defeat our enemy, we must understand our enemy. If we begin with the assumption that your enemy lacks human intelligence, desires and motivations, then we risk severely underestimating his ability. Therefore, if the United States continues down this dangerous path, it runs the risk of losing not only the moral war but the actual war.

The Victims of Violence and Theft in the U.S. The above graph presents that in every age-bracket, there are more theft victims than violence ones as a whole. The number of both violence and theft victims goes down gradually. Children between ages of 12~15 are mostly the targets of thieves. The aged are less offended by crimes of theft. Meanwhile, juveniles are the main objects of violence. From the graph it can be concluded that children below 24 are most likely to be offended by theft. The analyzed facts reveal to us that the American youngsters are living in the greatest danger brought about by various social evils.
Therefore, in order to keep people, especially children far away from the crimes of violence and theft, the U.S. government should take urgent measures to lay down strict laws. At the same time children themselves should improve their awareness of self-protection in daily life.

The Problem of the Wildlife Protection in the U.S. The above graphs show that the population of the U.S. increased rapidly during nearly 200 years thanks to the progress in technology and economy. However, the development is achieved at the cost of some wildlife.
There are various reasons for this situation. But the most prominent one is human being’s weak awareness of wildlife protection, which leads to the decrease and extinction of wildlife as a result of illegal hunting and killing for profits. It is becoming even more difficult for wildlife to survive, with the gradual decrease of forest and pasture coverage area and the increase of pollution and soil erosion due to the explosion of population.
To solve this problem, the U.S. government needs to enhance people’s awareness of wildlife protection and even to formulate some relevant laws and regulations. What’s more, more investment should be added to the wildlife protection to create a better environment for the existing wildlife.

Nowadays,we are living in a world where one is cross-connected with others highly. That is to say,the development of our nation needs information from all around the world. As an ancient nation with splendid civilization,we also need to learn from westerners while enhancing and glorifying our traditional culture. In the same manner, those foreigners who are interested in our nation will get valuable hints for their nation’s development.Knowing more about the global culture will help people from different countries understand each other better and live with each other peacefully.Only with understanding, the global issues and disputes can be settled in a satisfying way.Just imagine that how horrible it is if each country isolates from others and resists the foreign information.
Of course, advocating culture fusion does not equal to accepting the foreign culture wholly without considering its bad influence. We must admit that each culture has its merits and dregs, which need us to treat them dialectically.

Their application in school education has provided teachers and students with new approaches to knowledge and information. There is a heated discussion about whether computers will replace teachers. The following are the supporters’ and opponents’ opinions. Supporters: With the advanced computer and Internet, children can get the learning material whenever they want. Online teaching is becoming more and more popular that students can get planned lessons online. After each class, there is homework for them to do. Both the learning and practice can be done on computers. From computers students can learn something that they are interested in so that they won’t be restricted to the subjects that they are taught at school. Therefore, students will have the opportunity to achieve an all-around development. Opponents: Students need to communicate with teachers and get instructions from them whenever they have troubles in their study. Computers are only cold devices that will affect children’s ability to have face-to-face communication. Education is not only about imparting the knowledge, but also being a useful person. So students need to learn some useful values to be a good person which sometimes cannot be easily learned from computers. Children who use computer will learn to communicate with machines instead of people. There is a risk that they will be a generation of social illiterates.

    正确答案: 【范文】
The introduction of computers into classroom has greatly changed the traditional way of teaching and learning. Will computers replace teachers? Some supporters hold the view that computers provide different online teaching and students can get all-round development, while the opponents believe that teachers’ teaching is irreplaceable because it can teach children the values of life. In my opinion, it is impossible for computers to replace teachers.
I admit that computers benefit students in many ways, they can do their assignments with the help of appropriate software. They also access the Internet for research and entertainment. But as Spencer said, education has for its object the formation of character.” This is also the essence of the quality-oriented education advocated by our government. We need students who can think creatively, not cut and paste their essays out of software encyclopaedia. We need students who can tell truth from lies, not download unedited trivia from the Internet. We need students who can communicate face-to-face with others, not hide behind emails. These are the very aspects where teachers can provide help and guidance.
So teachers needn’t fear they would be replaced by computers. Instead, they should worry that if they did not adopt new technology, they would become outdated. Faced with the challenge of modern technology, what they should do is to change their attitudes. By learning and using this progressive approach, they can make their teaching more interactive and effective.

Recently, Chen Zhu, minister of Health, said that the government should gradually include anti-addiction counseling and drugs in basic medical insurance coverage. Should anti-addiction be covered in medical insurance? The following are the supporters’ and opponents’ opinions. Supporters: Smoking is now the biggest threat to human health. Through medical insurance to pay for their anti-addition drugs, smokers are more likely to have a try to quit smoking. It is hardly possible for smokers to quit smoking by their own efforts. If anti-addiction counseling and drugs are included in basic medical insurance coverage, smokers are more than willing to seek professional doctor for help and thus increase the chance of success. Helping smokers keep away from addiction not only benefits the smokers themselves, but also those around them, which is of great potential public health significance. In addition, the cost of using medical insurance to pay for anti-addiction is much lower than that to treat chronic diseases in the future. Opponents: Looking at the number of people who are smokers versus the great majority who aren't, it's much fairer to put the costs on the backs of those who cause them rather than on the backs of the great majority who don't smoke. Anti-addiction drugs are used to prevent  diseases, which is supposed to be paid from the public health or disease control, but not from medical insurance fund. If anti-addition is covered in medical insurance, with 270 million smokers in China, how can the insurance bear it? In terms of 3000 RMB per person, we need 810 billion for medical insurance fund, while in 2010, the total income of urban basic medical insurance fund is only 430.9 billion.

    正确答案: 【范文】
With the announcement that government is on the road of packing anti-smoking drugs in the medical insurance coverage, there is a heated public controversy. Supporters believe that this measure encourages smokers to quit smoking, increasing the chance of success. Opponents argue that there are too many smokers in China, so it is unfair for non-smokers to pay for the cost. As regards this issue, I am of the opinion that anti-addiction should be covered in the medical insurance.
For one thing, although smoking is a personal habit, the harm it brings about affects all the people in the country, even in the world because it can not only destruct the health of both the smoker and the people surrounding him, but also cause environmental pollution. Hence, the act to cover anti-addiction in medical insurance by government is beneficial to the society. For another, packing anti-smoking medicine into medical insurance coverage encourages more smokers to take the initiative to give up smoking. Usually when they have to pay for the abandonment of smoking, smokers are less willing to show an active and positive attitude towards the non-smoking program. However, if this service is free, they may be more inclined to have a try.
All in all, smoking is not just a personal habit, but also a serious social problem. Our planet cannot bear this choking air any more and we should take actions immediately to support the anti-addiction program by having anti-smoking drugs covered into medical insurance.

Directions: Study the following graphs carefully and write an essay in 160-200 words. Your essay should cover these three points: (1)effect of the country’s growing human population on its wildlife (2)possible reason for the effect (3)your suggestion for wildlife protection Your essay must be written neatly on the ANSWER SHEET.

    正确答案:
The above graphs show the relation between population growth and wildlife extinction rate in the U.S. The population of America has been increasing all the time since 1800. The other graph reveals that the number of wildlife species remained almost stable from 1600 to 1700. But it is saddening to see that wildlife extinction rate increases very fast from the year of 1700. We can get a rough conclusion: the increasing population endangers the existence of wildlife.
Several reasons may contribute to this grievous phenomenon. To begin with, millions of wild animals are hunted for food or other purposes. One notorious example is Japan’s whaling fleet. Whales are hunted for whale-bone as well as for blubber, thus its population decreasing each year. Another reason comes from the pollutions human make. The ecosystem has been disturbed and some animals are losing their habitats.
To stop the situation from becoming worse, we must take action at once. Related laws and regulations should be passed to protect the environment and wildlife. When people’s consciousness of protecting wildlife is raised, the safety of the wildlife will be guaranteed.

You should write 160—200 words on the ANSWER SHEET. There was a heated discussion on whether to require every student to wear a uniform. The following are arguments from supporters of uniforms and their competitors. Supportive arguments: There are those who say that wearing a uniform gives a person or a seller of identification with a larger, more important concept. They say that the practice of making persons wear uniforms, say in a school, eliminates all envy and competition in the matter of dress, such a poor person who cannot afford good quality clothing is not to be belittled by a wealthy person who wears expensive quality clothing. They also say it is helpful to build up team work ability, enhance the school's entire public image, and boost up the honor of collectiveness by wearing school uniform. Opposite arguments: Others say no one should be forced to wear a uniform under any circumstance. Uniforms are demanding to the human spirit and totally unnecessary in a democratic society. Uniforms tell the world that the person who wears one has no value as all individuals but only lives to function as a part of a whole. If all persons were to wear the same clothing, why would anyone strive to be better? When this happens, all incentive to improve one’s life is removed. Why world parents bother to work hard so that their children could have a better life than they had when they know that their children are going to be forced to have exactly the same life that they had? Uniforms also hurt the economy. Right now, billions of dollars are spent on the fashion industry yearly. Thousands of persons are employed in designing, creating and marketing different types of clothing. If everyone were forced to wear uniforms, artistic personnel would be unnecessary. Sales persons would be superfluous as well; why bother to sell the only items that are available?

    正确答案: 【范文】
Opinions are divided on the issues of whether every student is required to wear a uniform. Supporters of uniforms claim that uniforms can prevent students from keeping up with the Joneses. However, opponents of uniforms argue that uniforms not only ruin individuals’ personality, but heavily damage persons’ incentive to life better.
Arguments of either side make sense. But as far as I’m concerned, uniforms have more disadvantages than advantages. Firstly, we now live in an era which advocates personality. The same school uniforms will kill children’s aesthetic development and stunt individuals’ personality, creativity and imagination. Secondly, all students wearing uniforms will make their own clothes unused, which will cause enormous waste of national resources. Thirdly, the wearing of uniforms would destroy the fashion industry, which in turn would have a negative effect on advertising and promotion. Without advertising, newspapers and television would not be able to remain in business. The entire information and entertainment industry would collapse.
Although there still exist schools adopting the practice of uniforms, I believe they will change their ideas after they think through its disadvantages. What we should remember is that individuals’ freedom, motivation and identity will never be ignored.

Practice 2Write an essay in about 150 words based on the following drawing. In your essay, you should:1. Write out the messages conveyed by the cartoon.2. Give your comments.

    正确答案:
    【参考范文】
What all the customers want is high-quality service. Therefore, more emphasis should be laid on how to improve the quality of goods as well as that of the employees. Only in this way can we make the economy prosper in a healthier way.
