It is often said that politeness costs nothing. In fact,it seems that a little more politeness could save businesses £5 billion every year. Frequently hearing the phrase“thank you”or“well done”means the same to staff as a modest pay rise.

Praise and encouragement also makes employees more likely to work hard and stay in their jobs. In this way the business companies can save the cost of finding new employees. A third of 1,000 workers surveyed by a consulting firm said they did not get thanked at all when they did well-and a further third said they were not thanked enough. In both cases. staff said they felt undervalued, meaning they were less likely to exert themselves and were more likely to look for employment elsewhere.

The result of the survey shows that there would be around £5.2 billion loss in productivity if the employees felt less appreciated. According to the firm, praising staff has the same positive effect as a 1 per cent pay rise-and works out much cheaper for bosses. Three out of four employees said that regular acknowledgement by their bosses was important to them, but only a quarter said they were actually given as much praise as they felt they needed.

The survey found that those in blue-collar and manual jobs were less likely to be given any recognition for doing well. But it seems that they most need such praise.

In regional terms,Scottish staff felt most undervalued. Four out of ten workers said they were never thanked and eight out of ten said they would like more praise. However. workers in the North-East are less impressed by being praised by the boss,as only 69 per cent said they felt the need to be told“well done”regularly. Older employees and women need the most reassurance, according to psychologist Averil Leimon. She said that words of praise did more than creating a pleasant place to work-they could even promote profits.

The survey indicates that politeness could save businesses a huge amount of money every year because______.

A.politeness makes employees expect pay rise

B.politeness is less likely to make staff work harder

C.politeness helps employers find proper employees

D.politeness helps employers reduce the cost of staff employment

In 1959 Frederick Herzberg developed the Two-Factor theory of motivation. His research showed that certain factors were the true motivators or satisfiers. Hygiene factors, in contrast, created dissatisfaction if they were absent or inadequate. Dissatisfaction could be prevented by improvements in hygiene factors but these improvements would not alone provide motivation. Herzberg showed that to truly motivate an employee a business needs to create conditions that make him or her feel fulfilled in the workplace.

C Company aims to motivate its employees both by paying attention to hygiene factors and by enabling satisfiers. For example, it motivates and empowers its employees by appropriate and timely communication, by delegating responsibility and involving staff in decision making. It holds forums every year in which staff can be part of the discussions on pay rises. This shows recognition of the work people do and rewards them. The staff can even influence what food goes onto its restaurant menus. Employees thus become motivated to make choices that will increase their use of the restaurants.

What are the factors that make the employees feel motivated after they take part in the discussions on pay rises

    A.Work itself and responsibility
    B.Relationship with co-workers and promotion
    C.Recognition and achievement

    C

The number of skilled migrants returning home is increasing.

    D

The networks of kinship and language contribute to international business by taking advantage of legal loopholes.

从文章第五段中可知“An increasing number go home, taking with them both knowledge and contacts”,因此C选项说要回国的技术移民数量正在增加是正确的。A选项后半句“which can stimulate the locals to work harder”文中没有提供相关线索,无法推断,因此A项不正确。 D项旨在考查对第四段“Trust matters, especially in emerging markets where the rule of law is weak”的理解。 而D项由此推断这种“The networks of kinship and language”通过利用法律漏洞来促进国际商务贸易是不正确的。

Your small business is growing, the market has a need (29)______ your product, and you’re recruiting employees to expand your business. What could possibly (30)______ wrong? You must find good employees, figure out (35)______ motivates them, and then place them into the right position. Hiring employees is (36)______ and requires a lot of patience and energy. A for B to C in 30. A leave B come C go 31. A Although B if C but 32. A these B those C they 33. A on B in C with 34. A can B ought C shall 35. A what B that C which 36. A time-consume B time-consumed C time-consuming 37. 正确答案: 29.A “need”在“has”后面作名词的表达是“have a need for sth.”,意思是“需要某物”,所以A项正确。
33.C 固定短语“have something to do with” 是本题考查的内容,意思是“与… “a lot”,“little”,“nothing”等词可以替换该短语中的“something”一词,表示不同的意思:“have a lot to do with”意思是“与…有很大关系”,“have little to do with”的意思是“与…几乎没有关系”,“have nothing to do with” 的意思是“与…
“can”意思是“能够”;“ought”必须与“to”连用,意思是“应该”;“shall”也表示“应该”,但要跟在“I”或“we”的后面。
38.A 由于“or”连接两个并列的句子,所以前面的“to fill the job quickly with one of the first few people who come along”和后面的“…someone who is only sufficient”句子结构应该一样,这里是与“to”构成不定式,修饰“temptation”,因此,动词原形应该是正确的形式。
39.B 根据文章最后一段的第一句话可知,句子“you want to stop…and get back to your business”是表明这样做的原因,而非结果,所以可以排除“so”。
