The Sahara Desert is the largest desert in the wld. It stretchesacross Africa from Senegal to Egypt. The Sahara Desert is an unfriendlyenvironment. During the day it's very hot, at night it’s sometimesvery cold. It is also difficult to find water in the Sahara.

In 2006, Kevin Lin, Ray Zahab, Charlie Engle decided to dosomething very difficult. They made the decision to run across the SaharaDesert 4,300 miles (6,920km). It seemed impossible to do, but they wanted to try.The three men liked to test themselves, this would be a very big test.

On the mning of November 2, Kevin, Ray, Charlie started theirtrip across the Sahara. Every mning they began running at 5:00. At11 a.m.they stopped rested until 5 p.m. Then they ran again until 9:30 in theevening. Each day they ran about 40 miles (64 km). Every day it was the samething. They got up ran. They listened to music on their iPods, they ran ran.

Kevin, Ray, Charlie needed to eat a lot of food during theirtrip. Most people need about 2,000 calies of food each day. Kevin, Ray, Charlie needed between 6,000 9,000 calies every day. That's a lot offood! They also needed to drink a lot of water.

The three men had some problems on their trip, many times theywanted to quit go home. It was often very hot (140°F/60°C) duringthe day, the heat made them sick. Their legs feet hurt. Sometimes itwas very windy, they couldn't see. One time they got lost. But they didn'tquit. After 111 days, Kevin, Ray; Charlie successfully finished their tripacross the Sahara Desert. They hugged each other put their hs in thewater of the Red Sea. Then they ran to a hotel to take a long shower.

Only special plants can survive in the terrible climate of a desert, for these are regions where the annual range of the soil temperature can be over 75℃.Furthermore,during the summer there are few clouds in the sky to protect plants from the sun's ray.Another problem is the fact that there are frequently strong winds which drive small-sharp particles of sand into the plants, tearing and damaging them. The most difficult problem for all forms of plant life, however,is the fact that the entire annual rainfall occurs during a few days or weeks in spring.
Grasses and flowers in desert survive from one year to the next by existing through the long, hot,dry season in the form of seeds. These seeds remain inactive unless the right amount of rain falls. If no rain falls,or if insufficient rain falls, they wait until the next year,or even still the next.
Another factor that helps these plants to survive is the fact that their life cycles are short.By the time that the water from the spring rains disappears—ust a few weeks after it falls一such plants no longer need any.
The perennials(多年生植物)have special features which enable them to survive as plants for several years. Thus, nearly all desert perennials have extensive root systems below ground and a small shoot system above ground. The large root network enables the plant to absorb as much water as possible in a short time. The small shoot system,on the other hand, considerably limits water loss by evaporation(蒸发).
Another feature of many desert perennials is that after the rainy season they lose their leaves in preparation for the long, dry season, just as trees in wetter climates lose theirs in preparation for the winter. This reduces their water loss by evaporation during the dry season. Then,in the next rainy season, they come fully alive once more, and grow new branches, leaves and flowers, just as the grasses and flowers in desert do.

According to the passage, spring is the best time for plants in desert_________.
    A:to find a shady place
B:to get water for their growth
    C:to reduce water loss
    D:to enjoy the sunshine

    答案:B
第一段前三句分别列举了影响植物在沙漠中生长的三个因素: soil temperature(选项D) ,sun's rays(选项B ) , strong winds(选项A)。

    The Sahara

The name Sahara derives from the Arabic word for"desert"or"steppe".At 3.5 million square miles,
an area roughly the size of the United States, the Sahara Desert in northern Africa is the largest desert in the
world. It spans the continent from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. Daytime temperatures can reach as high
as 130°F.The humidity sometimes gets into the teens. But it can also be as low as 2.5 percent, the lowest in
the world. Most of the Sahara receives less than five inches of rain per year, while large areas sometimes have
no rainfall at all for years.
At the heart of the Sahara is the landlocked north African country of Niger. Here the sand dunes can be
100 feet tall and several miles long. Here sand plains stretch over an area larger than Germany where there is
neither water nor towns.Yet sitting in the midst of the surrounding desert is the town of Bilma. Suddenly there
are pools of clear water. Surprisingly, there are groves of date palms.Underground water resources,or oases,
sufficient to support irrigated agriculture are found in dry stream beds and depressions.Irrigation ditches run
off a creek to water fields.Corn, cassava, tea, peanuts, hot peppers, and orange, lime, and grapefruit trees grow
in these fields.Donkeys and goats graze on green grass.
The Sahara of Niger is still a region where you can see a camel caravan of 500 camels tied together in
loose lines as long as a mile, traveling toward such oasis towns. There a caravan will collect life-sustaining
salt, which is mined from watery basins, and transport it up to 400 miles back to settlements on the edges of
the desert. The round trip across the vast sands takes one month.

Rainfall in most of the Sahara is_______________.
A:less than five inches per year
B:less than ten inches per year
C:less than twenty inches per year
    D:zero

    答案:A

The perennials(多年生植物)have special features that enable them to survive as plants for several years. Thus, nearly all desert perennials have extensive root systems below ground and a small shoot system above ground. The large root network enables the plant to absorb as much water as possible in short time.

Grasses and flowers in desert are able to survive because they stay in the form of seeds to wait for the right amount of water to come.
    A:Right
    B:Wrong
    C:Not mentioned

    答案:A

    Deforestation and Desertification(沙漠化)
The Sahel zone lies between the Sahara desert and the fertile savannahs(热带大草原)of northern Nigeria and South Sudan. The word sahel comes from Arabic and means marginal or transitional ,and this is a good description of the semi-arid(半干旱) lands, which occupy much of the Western African countries of Mail, Mauritania, Niger ,and Chad.
Unfortunately, over the last century the Sahara desert has steadily crept southwards eating into once productive Sahel lands. United Nations surveys show that over 70 percent of the dry land in agriculture use in Africa has deteriorate dover the last 30 years. Droughts have become more severe, the most recent lasting over twenty years in parts of the Sahel region. The same process of desertification is taking place across southern Africa as the Kalahari desert advances into Botswana and parts of South Africa.
One of the major causes of this desert advance is poor agricultural land use, driven by the pressures of increasing population. Overgrazing一 keeping too many farm animals on the land一means that grasses and other plants cannot recover, and scarce water supplies are exhausted. Over cultivation一 trying to grow too many crops on poor land一 results in the soil becoming even less fertile and drier, and beginning to break up. Soil erosion (侵蚀) follows, and the land turns into desert.
Another cause of desertification is loss of tree cover. Trees are cut down for use as fuel and to clear land for agricultural use. Tree roots help to bind the soil together, to conserve moisture, and to provide a habitat for her plants and animals. When trees are cut down, the soil begins to dry and loosen, wind and rain erosion increase, other plant species die, and eventually the fertile top soil may be almost entirely lost, leaving only bare rock and dust.
The effects of loss of topsoil and increased drought are irreversible. They are, however, preventable. Careful conservation of tree cover and sustainable agricultural land use have been shown to halt deterioration of soils and lessen the effects of shortage of rainfall. One project in Kita in south-west Malifunded by UNDP has involved local communities in sustainable management offorest, while at the same time providing a viable(有活力的)agricultural economy. This may be a model for similar projects in other West African countries.

Ordinary plants can not survive the desert weather as a result of the following except for_________.
    A:the strong winds
    B:the strong sun's ray
    C:the long summer days
    D:the high soil temperature

    答案:C

The phrase"an area roughly the size of the United States"gives an indication of the size of_______________.
    A:northern Africa
    B:Niger
    C:the Sahara
    D:all of Africa

    答案:C
