Text 1 In an essay entitled“Making It in America”,the author Adam Davidson relates a joke from cotton country about just how much a modern textile mill has been automated:The average mill has only two employees today,“a man and a dog.The man is there to feed the dog,and the dog is there to keep the man away from the machines.”Davidson's article is one of a number of pieces that have recently appeared making the point that the reason we have such stubbornly high unemployment and declining middleclass incomes today is also because of the advances in both globalization and the information technology revolution, which are more rapidly than ever replacing labor with machines or foreign worker. In the past, workers with average skills, doing an average job, could earn an average lifestyle. But,today, average is officially over.Being average just won't earn you what it used to.It can't when so many more employers have so much more access to so much more above average cheap foreign labor, cheap robotics, cheap software, cheap automation and cheap genius. Therefore, everyone needs to find their extra—their unique value contribution that makes them stand out in whatever is their field of employment.Yes,new technology has been eating jobs forever, and always will. But there's been acceleration. As Davidson notes,“In the 10 years ending in 2009,U.S.factories shed workers so fast that they erased almost all the gains of the previous 70 years;roughly one out of every three manufacturing jobs—about 6 million in total—disappeared.”There will always be change—new jobs, new products, new services. But the one thing we know for sure is that with each advance in globalization and the I.T.revolution,the best jobs will require workers to have more and better education to make themselves above average. In a world where average is officially over, there are many things we need to do to support employment, but nothing would be more important than passing some kind of G.I.Bill for the 21st century that ensures that every American has access to posthigh school education.
According to the author,to reduce unemployment, the most important is______

A.to accelerate the I.T.revolution
B.to ensure more education for people
C.to advance economic globalization
D.to pass more bills in the 21st century

【直击答案】文章中最后一段出现了与题干“reduce unemployment”近义的表达“support employment”,而题干“the most important”与文章“nothing would be more important than”相对应,指出促进就业最重要的是颁布类似于“G.I.Bill”(G.I.Bill:二战后签署的“军人安置法案”,给退伍美军提供免费大学或技校教育等福利措施。)

In spite of all stories of prosperity in the United States, not only does poverty exist there, but crimes of various types have been increasing at an alarming rate. Most acts of violence were committed by young people. 57% of the criminals arrested in 1979 were youths below 25 of age.
Everyone agrees that crime is partly a result of bad material conditions: poverty, lack of education, living without a settled home, being parentless, sufferings from other kinds of misfortune, etc.
There are also other factors than material conditions which are responsible for the sharp increase of crime rate. In the first place, some state laws provide a death penalty but some not.Secondly, the Constitution allows every citizen to carry weapons for his own protection. It is therefore possible and easy for anyone in the country to get a gun. Finally, there has been too much shown on TV and too much reported in newspaper of all kinds of crime, the details of which are so accurately described that even children know how to duplicate what they have seen or read.
All these have resulted in a high frequency of crimes committed both by professional criminals and by nonprofessional ones in murder, drug smuggling, robbery, etc.
?The author intends to tell the readers that__________.

A.the United States is a wealthy country although poverty and crime exist there
B.crime has become a serious problem in the United States, although it is said to be a prosperous one
C.despite the fact that crimes have been increasing rapidly in the United States, it is a country of prosperity
D.in spite of stories about poverty and crime in the United States, it is prospering at an increasing rate

    答案:B

    Passage Three
Americans are well known for the strange diets they always seem to be following. It seems that Americans like to diet almost as much as they like to eat.New types of diet plans are always coming out.Usually, though, they don't stay popular for long.
There are many diets on the market. It is often difficult to know which ones really work. It's also hard to believe how fast a dieter is supposed to shed pounds.A lot has been written about dieting. And some interesting facts about diets and foods have been discovered.
For example, did you know that the more celery you eat,the more weight you will lose?Celery has“negative”calories. The body burns up more calories digesting a piece of celery than there are in the celery stick itself.
Dieters?shun?potatoes because they think they are fattening. But they aren't.A potato has about the same number of calories as an apple. To gain a single pound, you would have to eat eleven pounds of potatoes!
Some dieters even worry about getting fat from licking postage stamps. But they have nothing to worry about. The glue on an average stamp has only about one-tenth of a calorie.Maybe a diet of post-age stamps would be popular?

One could conclude from this passage that______

A.dieting is not a healthy practice
    B.everyone diets
C.there is only one good way to lose weight
    D.dieting can be confusing

According to Paragraph 3,to be a successful employee, one has to____

    A.work on cheap software
    B.ask for a moderate salary
    C.adopt an average lifestyle
    D.contribute something unique

【直击答案】文章第三段最后一句指出“Therefore, everyone needs to find their extra—their unique value contribution that makes them stand out in whatever is their field of employment.”(因此,人人都需要有另外的价值,异于常人的独特价值能够让他们在各自的雇佣市场上脱颖而出。)题干的“to be a successful employee”与原文中的“that makes them stand out in whatever is their field of employment”是同义替换,“everyone needs to find their extra—their unique value contribution”与D项中的“contribute something unique”是同义替换,所以D项正确。

Directions: Please write an essay in about 150 words entitled “Water Shortage” based on the following outline. The first sentence has been given. Outline: (1)Water shortage has become much more serious than before. (2)The chief reasons for water shortage. (3)My suggestions.

Water shortage has become much more serious than before. According to the statistics. 2.2 billion people in 62 countries are facing the shortage of fresh water in the world; there is 300 million people in 26 countries are severely short of water. It is expected that other eight countries will join the 26 countries for severely lacking water in 2010 and 2.7 billion people around the world will face the problem of severe water short-age in 2025.
The chief reason for water shortage is the low efficiency of water using. As we can see, some water can be reused. For example, we can use the water that we have used to wash clothes, to rinse the toilet. As statistics show, one ton of water will be used while one ton of paper is produced. But with the use of recycled water, the consumption of water can be reduced to half ton. Obviously, with the use of recycled water, the water use efficiency will increase, thus a great lot of water can be saved. But unfortunately, in most of the countries, many companies, particularly in some industries that consume masses of water every day, such as paper making and steel making, haven’t built up their recycle system of water. Lots of water is directly drained without recycling everyday.
So how to build up more recycle system of water has become most pressing business that can solve the water shortage problem.
