Mr. Luzaich created the seal to prevent the wine from declining with ______.

    A.neoprene

    B.visco-elastic polymer

    C.silicon

    D.argon

全文有几处提到,第二段一开始“before sealing it airtight with silicon”,第四段“He experimented with several substances, from neoprene to a visco-elastic polymer (which he dismissed as“too gooey”),before settling on a food-grade silicon.”(他试验了几种材料,从氯丁橡胶到黏性聚合体(他觉得“太黏了”所以没用),最后选定了食品用硅。)

Riches and Romance From France's Wine Harvest

September is harvest time. And with bunches of grapes swinging(摇摆)in the wind,
the vineyards of southern France are getting ready to celebrate it.
The yearly wine festival is held in honour of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. It's a
fun time with parties, music, dancing, big meals and,of course, lots of wine.
French wine-making began more than 2,500 years ago.The world's oldest type of vine
grows in France and always produces a good quality wine.Today France produces one-fifth
of the world's wine, and some of the most famous varieties.
The top wine-producing areas are Bordeaux,Burgundy and the Loire Valley.
Champagne,a drink used in celebrations,is named after the place where sparkling(有气
泡的)wine was first produced in 1700.
Wine is made from the juice of freshly picked grapes. It is the sugars that turn into
    alcohol.
Traditionally, people used to take off their shoes and crush the grapes with their bare
feet to bring out the juice.Nowadays, this practice is usually carried out by machines.
Each wine producing region has its own character, based on its type of grapes and soil.
The taste of wine changes with time.Until 1850,all French champagne was sweet.
Now,both wine and champagne taste slightly bitter.
The drink has always been linked with riches, romance and nobleness.Yet the French
think of it in more ordinary terms.
They believe it makes daily living easier, less hurried and with fewer problems.
"All its links are with times when people are at their best;with relaxation, happiness,
long slow meals and the free flow of ideas,"wrote wine expert Hugh Johnson.

The French people believe that drinking wine is a good way to relax.

Directions:In this part, there is one passage followed by a summary. Read the passage carefully and complete the summary with the appropriate words from the passage. Remember to write the answers on the Answer Sheet. Questions 1-5 are based on the following passage. Wine can be made with red grapes or white grapes, and, especially in the case of red wines, a number of medical researchers have reported that a moderate amount of wine has certain health benefits. This may be one of the reasons why the number of people drinking wine has risen over the past years. As new wine shoppers browse the shelves of their local markets, they face a tough decision. Should they buy a wine with a cork or a screw top? And shoppers are not alone in their dilemma. Wineries are also facing tough choices in the best way to seal their products. The root of the problem lies in “cork taint.” Cork taint refers to a problem with wine that has been sealed with a bad cork. Traditionally, all corks are made from a special oak tree that grows around the Mediterranean. In the process of making the corks and sealing wine bottles, a certain type of mold may start to grow on some corks. Over time, this mold can produce a chemical that makes the wine inside the bottle taste musty. In fact, the human tongue is so sensitive to this particular compound that people can taste it even diluted up to six parts per trillion! How big is the problem of cork taint? Some experts from the wine industry claim cork taint affects one out of every ten bottles of wine. And as one spokesperson for an American winery says, “No other packaging industry in the world would put up with that kind of failure rate.” Some wine makers see a possible solution to the problem of cork taint through adopting the tried and true method of sealing bottles with screw tops. However, many wineries are still playing it safe and sticking to corks for two reasons. First, there is the old belief among cork users that small amounts of oxygen are able to penetrate corks. This oxygen, they say, is necessary for the proper aging of fine wines, especially those aged 10 years or more. Screw tops do not allow for any oxygen to get into the bottles after they are sealed. Another problem arises from the image screw tops have with the public. In most people’s minds, screw tops are only found on cheap, low-quality wines. It will take a lot of effort from wineries to re-educate the public if they want to change the image of screw tops. In addition, there is the problem of losing the romantic, elegant mood produced by the ceremonial popping of the cork. Consumers don’t seem to feel the same thrill when unscrewing a top. Summary: The wine industry is facing a dilemma. What is the best way to 1 wine bottles? Many people think that it is only 2 for wine bottles to be sealed with corks. They think that oxygen needs to be able to penetrate the cork. Other experts, however, suggest that wineries change to 3 . Using corks can lead to cork taint, a bad taste in the wine caused by 4 . However, it is unlikely that the public will accept this solution. They will most likely 5 buying wine with corks for the romantic image.

1.seal 文章第一段最后两句话提到shoppers are not alone in their dilemma. Wineries are also facing tough choices in the best way to seal their products.
Some wine makers see a possible solution to the problem of cork taint through adopting the tried and true method of sealing bottles with screw tops.

According to the text, the “Pek Wine Steward” is ______.

    A.a metal cone

    B.a thermoelectric cooler

    C.a gas injector

    D.a wine preserver

Pek Wine Steward在文中多次提到,最开始是第二段开头“The Pek Wine Steward prevents wine from spoiling by injecting argon, an inert gas, into the bottle before sealing it airtight with silicon.” A“金属圆锥体”,第四段提到“the Pek Wine Steward, a metal cone into which a wine bottle is inserted”,但这只是其外形而已;B“热电冷却器”是豪华版Pek Wine Steward包括的一个部分;C选项不符合文意;D是正确答案。

Practice 1 The forger’s greatest advantage is that many buyers wait years before opening their fraudulent bottles, if they open them at all. Bill Koch told me that he owns wine that he has no intention of ever drinking. He collects bottles from certain vineyards almost as if they were baseball cards, aiming to complete a set. “I just want a hundred and fifty years of Lafitte on the wall,” he said. He would hesitate before consuming the harder-to-come-by vintages, because to do so would render the set incomplete, and also because the rarest old wines often come not from the best vintages but from the worst. Historically, when good vintages were produced, collectors would lay them down to see how they would age, Koch explained. But when renowned vineyards produced mediocre vintages, people would drink them soon after they were bottled, making the vintage scarce. The second great advantage for wine forgers is that when collectors do open fraudulent bottles, they often lack the experience and acute sense of taste to know that they have been defrauded. To begin with, even genuine old wines vary enormously from bottle to bottle. “It’s a living organism,” Sotheby’s Serena Sutcliffe told me. “It moves, it changes, it evolves-and once you’re into wines that are 40, 50, 60 years old, even if the bottles are stored side by side in similar conditions, you will get big differences between bottles.” Studies suggest that the experience of smelling and tasting wine is extremely susceptible to interference from the cognitive parts of the brain. Several years ago, Frédéric Brochet, a Ph. D. student in oenology at the University of Bordeaux, did a study in which he served 57 participants amid range red Bordeaux from a bottle with a label indicating that it was a modest vendee table. A week later, he served the same wine to the same subjects, but this time poured from a bottle indicating that the wine was a grand cru. Whereas the tasters found the wine from the first bottle “simple”, “unbalanced” and “weak”, they found the wine from the second “complex”, “balanced” and “full”. Brochet argues that our “perceptive expectation” arising from the label often governs our experience of a wine, overriding our actual, sensory response to whatever is in the bottle. Thus there is a bolder kind of forger who actually substitutes one type of wine for another. He often works with genuine bottles bearing genuine labels, obtaining empties from restaurants or antique shops, filling them with another type-or types-of wine, and replacing the cork and the capsule, assuming that the status-conscious buyer will never taste the difference. And, in many cases, this assumption is right. Sutcliffe believes that the vast majority of fake wines are happily enjoyed. Rajat Parr, a prominent wine director who oversees restaurants in Las Vegas, told me that several years ago, some of his customers ordered a bottle of 1982 Pttrus, which can sell in restaurants for as much as 6,000 dollars.
