For nearly ten years, the Unified Modeling Language (UML) has been the industry standard for visualizing, specifying, constructing, and documenting the(71) of a software-intensive system. As the(72) standard modeling language, the UML facilitates communication and reduces confusion among project(73) . The recent standardization of UML 2.0 has further extended the language's scope and viability. Its inherent expressiveness allows users to(74) everything from enterprise information systems and distributed Web-based applications to real-time embedded systems.

The UML is not limited to modeling software. In fact, it is expressive enough to model(75) systems, such as workflow in the legal system, the structure and behavior. of a patient healthcare system, software engineering in aircraft combat systems, and the design of hardware.

To understand the UML, you need to form. a conceptual model of the language, and this requires learning three major elements: the UML's basic building blocks, the rules that dictate how those building blocks may be put together, and some common mechanisms that apply throughout the UML.

    [考点]主旨题。结合整篇文章可知,作者在论述防震建筑。
    【听力原文】
After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report: the damage and death toll could have been much worse. [37] More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.
Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highway. In addition, changes made to the construction methods in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city’s buildings and highways, [39] making them more resistant to quakes.
Despite the good news, engineers today are determined to come up with [39] a new design that would offer even greater security to buildings during earthquakes. In the past, people used [38] steel and rubber, materials that bend without breaking to make buildings resistant to earthquakes. The new design would install computers in the building and the computers would help the buildings adjust itself during the earthquake. Such buildings would be called smart buildings and could be very expensive to build. However, [39] they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.
Questions 37 to 39 are based on the passage you have just heard.
    37. How many people were killed in the earthquake in Los Angeles in 1994?
    38. What did people use in the past to make buildings resistant to earthquakes?
    39. What is the passage mainly about?

    B

    Vauban

We know cars are terrible polluters, but would you give yours up? Vauban, a community in southwestern Germany, did just that, and its 5,000 citizens are doing fine. Most streets are of vehicles, and there are generous green spaces and good public-transport lines, including fas uum and bicycle paths. When people must drive, they can turn to car-sharing clubs. “All the citizens had the chance to plan their own city,” says Andreas Dellexe, an energy expert, “and it’s just bow we wanted it to be.”

    Denmark

During the period of gas shortage in the early 70s, Denmark decided to become self-sufficient(自足). So they began a few projects making smart investments along the way.

On the island of Satosoc, local families, fishermen and farmers bought wind turbines(涡轮机) to produce their own energy, Within seven years these turbines were completely paid for. And can you believe just one of wind turbines produces enough electricity for 600 households?

    C

    D

    Trey Parker and Matt Stone

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park, have built a sustainable(可持续的) castle with outer siding and inner flooring of recycled wood, recycled carpeting, high-efficiency boiler systems.

I think more and more today, people are willing to make a statement about the Earth and how they want to protect it,” Michael Ruth, home designer and builder says. “For high-end homes in this valley, this is entirely consistent with what they cost.”

    P-NUT

Who doesn’t love the name P-NUT—short for Personal-Neo Urban Transport? It’s Honda’s latest attempt to create a tiny footprint for a new urban vehicle.

This little P-NUT is unique. With a central driving position, the car is designed to move in tight settings. The 11-foot micro car will sent three with two rear-seat passengers behind the driver.

“The P-NUT concept explores the packaging and design potential for a vehicle designed for the city lifestyle.” Said Dave Marek, a Honda design spokesman.

    F

    Israel Company

Is it possible that annoying rush hour traffic could become a source of renewable energy?

Israel’s Technion Institute of Technology claims that if we placed special generator(发电机) under roads, railways, and runways—we could harvest enough energy to mass-produce electricity. A trial process has been used on a smaller scale, in dance clubs for instance, where the pounding feet of dancers light up the floor.

“We can produce electricity anywhere there is a busy road using energy that normally goes to waste,” said Uri Amit, chairman of Israel’s Technion Institute of Technology.

    Coffee

Coffee. Some of us can’t start our day without it, and we don’t mind waiting 10 minutes in line for it.

Here is the most effective tip to make you a superstar in environment protection.

Get a coffee machine for your home or coffee, or persuade your company into buying one. (Tell them it will improve productivity.) Skip the coffee line on the way to work and make something that is better-tasting and much better for your wallet.

Plus, you won’t need those plastic cups or carrying cas that just get thrown away. Better yet, use your favorite c mug.

The significance of local authorities undertaking the task of rebuilding city centers lies in that ______ .
    A

it created a large number of jobs for individuals

    B

it could speed up the building of new houses dramatically

    C

it meant more investment from the government in architecture

    D

it indicated a change in the pattern of architecture

    正确答案: C
    解析:
逻辑关系的找寻与判断。关于地方政府承担市中心重建任务的重要意义,录音中提到当地政府成为了important patrons of architecture(重要建筑赞助商),并且指出“This represented a shift away from the private individuals who had dominated the architectural scene for centuries.”,可知,该事件意味着建筑赞助者从私人向政府的转变,因此具有很大意义。因此选项D为正确答案。
    【录音原文】
The most important trends in early 20th century architecture simply passed Britain by. Whilst Gropius was working on cold, hard expanses of glass, and Le Corbusier was experimenting with the use of reinforced concrete frames, we had staid architects like Edwin Lutyens producing Neo-Georgian and Renaissance country houses for an outmoded landed class. In addition there were slightly batty architect-craftsmen, the heirs of William Morris, still trying to turn the clock back to before the Industrial Revolution by making chairs and spurning new technology. Only a handful of Modern Movement buildings of any real merit were produced here during the 1920s and 1930s, and most of these were the work of foreign architects who had settled in this country.
After the Second World War, the situation began to change. The Modern Movement’s belief in progress and the future struck a chord with the mood of post-war Britain and, as reconstruction began under Attlee’s Labor government in 1945, there was a desperate need for cheap housing which could be produced quickly. The use of prefabricated elements, metal frames, concrete cladding and the absence of decoration—all of which had been embraced by Modernists abroad and viewed with suspicion by the British—were adopted to varying degrees for housing developments and schools. Local authorities, charged with the task of rebuilding city centers, became important patrons of architecture. This represented a shift away from the private individuals who had dominated the architectural scene for centuries.

more money is going to be used to build houses in risky places

    B

Ashford is a safe place for building houses

    C

The environment minister pledged to boost spending on flood defences from £600 million now to £800 million a year by 2011. The extra money will be welcome, but will not address the fundamental problem: England’s penchant for building houses in silly places (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all much stricter). Some £200 billion-worth of houses, businesses and other infrastructure is at risk from flooding. One in ten new houses are being built in similarly risky places, including 31,000 planned for Ashford in Kent and 120, 000 in London’s Thames Gateway.
