What does the speaker mainly talk about?____ in the U.S.

Cars
Americans depend on their cars more than any other people. The family car has been a common thing in the early 20th century, and it has changed American life. Many people have moved outside of the large cities to the suburbs. Some Americans spend two hours a day or more in their cars going to work and back home. Cars have become the means of transportation for most Americans when they go shopping and even go on vacations. In the past, Americans liked big cars, and the gas wasn’t expensive. However, the price of gas has greatly increased in recent years. Smaller cars and foreign cars have become very popular. That’s why Japanese and German cars sell well in the US.
Q11: When did the family car become common in America?
Q12: Why do more Americans have to drive to work?
Q13: Why do people like smaller cars now?
Q14: How popular are Japanese and German cars in the U.S.?
Q15: What does the speaker mainly talk about?

W: Hello, I’m Marry, but have we met before?

Q: What can we learn about the man from the conversation?

M: Is this table on the comer Okay?
W: Sure. We can sit here.
M: Gee. You’ve hardly got anything on your tray.
W: Yeah. I guess I’ m just not that hungry.
M: What’s the matter? Aren’t you feeling well?
W: Well, I’ve been really worried. It’s my car. It’s in the shop again.
M: Really? What’s wrong this time?
W: I don’t know exactly. Something is wrong with the brakes, I think.
M: Well, at least that shouldn’t cost you much to fix. Parts are cheaper for all the American cars like yours. Did the mechanic say how much it would cost?
W: He said he would call me with an estimate later on today.
M: Watch out he doesn’t try to take advantage of you.
    W: What do you mean?
M: Well, some car mechanics, if they think that someone doesn’t know much about cars, they might try to overcharge that person.
W: Maybe so. But I trust this guy. He was recommended by one of my neighbors. He has done some work for me in the past and his prices seemed to be reasonable.
M: Oh, that’s good to know. Maybe I’ll try using him in the future. By the way, do you need a ride home after class today?
W: Oh, I’d sure appreciate it. It’s really tough getting around without a car when you live off campus.
Questions 1 to 3 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
    1. What does the woman say about her car?
    2. What does the man say about the car mechanic?
    3. What does the man offer to do?

Why is a woman better at learning foreign languages than a man?
    A

The area of the left side of a woman’s brain for language learning develops better than that of a man’s.

    B

The right side of a woman’s brain for language develops better than that of a man’s.

    C

The area of the left side of a woman’s brain for feelings develops better than that of a man’s.

    D

The area of the right side of a woman’s brain fit for seeing in the dark develops better than that of a man’s.

根据文章可知人类左半脑发展数学、言语、阅读等,“In men and women, different areas in each side of the brain develop differently. (男女左右半脑不同区域发展情况不同。),而后对此进行举例“In boys, for example, it is the area for mathematics;and in girls it is the area for language learning that develops better”(男孩数学区域发展较好,女孩语言区域发展较好)。这里需要注意例子中比较级的使用。由此可知,女孩子左半脑掌管语言的区域要比男孩子的发展的好。所以A项是正确答案。
    【录音原文】
Do you believe that men and women think differently? Many people say no. They say men and women are born with exactly the same abilities to think and learn. They think social life affects their ways of thinking.
In the past ten years, many scientists have studied the differences between men and women and they all got the same conclusion:men and women are different because their brains are different and this makes men and women see the world in different ways. Boys, for example, are generally better than girls at mathematical ideas involving objects and their relationships. Boys also are generally faster in response than girls of hand and eye movements in ball games. Girls, on the other hand, generally start speaking earlier and can see better in the dark and are better at learning foreign language than boys.
What makes men and women better at one thing or another? The answer is the brain. The brain has two sides. The nerves on the left side are for mathematics, speech, reading, etc, while those on the right side are for artistic creation and other senses. In men and women, different areas in each side of the brain develop differently. In boys, for example, it is the area for mathematics;and in girls it is the area for language learning that develops better. Another interesting difference is that the two sides of a man’s brain are interconnected by a smaller number of nerves than in the case of a woman, so the flow of information between them is more limited Scientists think this affects some of our abilities.
