    Play
Play is the principal business of childhood, and in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy, every child needs opportunity and the right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys.Their main func- tion is to suggest, encourage and assist play.To succeed in this they must he good toys, which children will play with often, and will come back to again and again. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child's development.
In recent years research on infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities,is largely determined in the first three years of his life .So a baby's ability to profit from the right play materials should not be underestimated.A baby, who is encouraged and stimulated, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully.
In the next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds.Every type of suitable toy should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability. Bricks and jigsaws(七巧板)and construction toys ; painting, scribbling(涂鸦)and making things;sand and water play;toys for imaginative and pretending play;the first social games for learning to play and get on with others.
By the third stage of play development—from five to seven or eight years—the child is at school .But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning,at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the child most enjoys.
Until the age of seven or eight, play and work mean much the same to a child. But once reading has been mastered, then books and schools become the main source of learning.Toys are still interesting and valuable, they lead on to new hobbies, but、their significance has changed—to a child of nine or ten years, toys and games mean,as to adults, relaxation and fun.

According to the passage, the abilities a child has inherited from his parents________.
    A: determine his character
B: will not change after the age of three
C: partly determine the standard he is likely to reach
D: to a large extent determine the choice of toys

    答案:C
这句话“…as a child grows up ,he should be given different toys”和第一段的最后一句话“…it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child's development”(给处于不同生长期的孩子选择合适的玩具很重要)是一样的意思。

答案的依据是第二段的最后一句话,选项C讲到的3点:given toys, talked to and played with在这句话里都可以找到:talked to and shown things and played with,只是次序稍有不同。

这道题的答案取决于对整篇文章的理解和把握,本文的题目是Play,第一段的第一句话就把文章的中心点出来了:…in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being.

A Minor Microsurgery Last year,Sean Martinovich, from Whitianga, had life-saving surgery when a golf-sized tumor was removed from his brain stem. But the operation left half his face paralysed. He talked with a slur, sometimes dribbled(流 口水)out of the side of his mouth and could not close his eye properly.Although he could run around with the other boys in the playground, when they laughed he could not laugh with them.Without a smile,he could suffer psychologically and emotionally. Last week,6-year-old Sean had seven hours of microsurgery that should give him back his smile.Doctor Bartlett removed a nerve from the back of one of Sean's legs and transplanted it into his face.On the normal side of his face the nerve divides into lots of little branches."We'll cut those nerve branches and then we'll take a nerve graft from one leg and tunnel it across his face from one side to the other and join that on to the nerve that' s been cut on the good side of his face."Doctor Bartlett said before the operation."If this was not fixed he conld face physical and emotional problems as he got older,"Doctor Bartlett said."Socially people can become quite withdrawn because of the face paralysis. It's easy for people, especially children,to become rather emotionless because they prefer the flatness of no movement on either side to the weirdness of an asymmetry of smiling on one side and having this twisted face." Sean is not smiling yet.Over the next six months the nerves will grow across the face to the damaged side and after that movement will hopefully come back.Sean's parents,Steve and Wendy Martinovich, said they had been through a year of hell. But their son was a determined boy who just got on with it,said Mrs Martinovich. They are amazed at the technology that they hope will restore the cheeky smile they love so much. For Doctor Bartlett the microsurgery is almost routine. For Sean's parents,it is a miracle.

How old was Sean Martinovich when the golf-sized tumor was removed from his brain stem?
    A:4 years old.
    B:5 years old.
    C:6 years old.
    D:7 years old.

Text 3I am not one who golfs. The only time I tried it I was confident that a dozen balls would be an adequate supply. This is the sport of retired people: how hard could it be? The confidence was misplaced, also, one by one, the balls, and I had to quit somewhere around the seventh hole. On the sixth, actually, I hit a car—there was absolutely no reason for a highway to be that close to a golf course—but that’s another story. The point is that the game did not yield up its mystery to me; I remain, in the golfing universe, a child of darkness. I do find that I am able to watch golf on television, however, where it is possible to experience a calmness that the game itself sadly lacks. Spread out on a couch and indifferent to the outcome (very important), you watch tiny white balls sail improbable distances over the biggest lawns in the world, interrupted occasionally by advertisements for expensive cars. One of the players is named Tiger. Another is named Love. If you have access to a bottle of Martinis (optional), the joy potential can be quite huge.

There is usually a price for pleasure so mindless. In the case of TV golf, it is listening to the commentators analyze the players’ swings. What looks to you like a single, continuous, and not difficult act is revealed, via slow motion and a sort of virtual-chalkboard graphics, to be a sequence of intricately measured adjustments of shoulder to hip, head to arm, elbow to wrist, and so on. Where you see fluidity, the experts see geometry; what to you is nature is machinery to them—parallel lines, extended planes, points of impact. They murder to examine. Yet, apparently, these minutes and individualized measurements make all the difference between being able reliably to land a golf ball in an area, three hundred yards away, the size of a bathmat and, say, randomly hitting a car, which, let’s face it, only a fool would drive right next to a golf course. There is a major disproportion, in other words, between the straightforwardness of the game and the fantastic precision required to play it, a disproportion mastered by a difficult but, to the ordinary observer, almost invisible technique.

Short stories are the same. A short story is not as restrictive as a sonnet, but, of all the literary forms, it is possibly the most single-minded. Its aim, as it was identified by the modern genre’s first theorist, Edgar Allan Poe, is to create “an effect”—by which Poe meant something almost physical, like a sensation or an extreme excitement.

The author quotes his own experience with golf to show that _____.

[A] things are often not so simple and easy as they seem

[B] his experience with golf has been a frustrating failure

[C] that experience of his offered much for his later life

[D] apparent truths are more often than not unreliable

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming,or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind of football, hockey, golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no manmade rules,as there are for such games as golf and football. There are,of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports,we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a"team game".We should be mistaken in this. There are,it is true,no "matches " between "teams"of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man.He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve the skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men,but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

Choose the best title for the passage:_________
A:Mountaineering Is Different from Golf and Football
B:Mountaineering Is More Attractive than Other Sports
    C:Mountaineering
    D:Mountain Climbers

Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship , and to take risks on high mountains?
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no manmade rules , as there are for such games as golf and football.
根据第四段最后一句中提到的:...when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend , there is obviously teamwork.
根据倒数第二段第二句:He has to兔ht the forces of nature.

All right, it looks like you’ve got all of your English and math credits, so you’re OK there, as well as your humanities and uh, social sciences. But for natural science…hmm…you took biology in your first year, but I don’t see anything after that. You’re required to have at least one more natural science coupe before you can transfer.
M: Oh, really? I thought I needed only one science course.
W: No, sorry, you need at least eight credits in natural science, and that means two courses.
M: I didn’t know that. OK. Then I wonder which course I should take. What do you recommend?
W: Next semester…let’s see…it looks like astronomy, botany, and ecology are all being offered. There’s also a course in meteorology for non-science majors.
M: Meteorology? Do you mean, like, the weather?
    W: That’s right.
M: Hey, that might be kind of interesting. I always wanted to know how they forecast the weather.
W: Then that’s the fight course for you. Oh, and, Sean, it looks like you also need two credits in physical education.
    M: Physical!
W: Right. You’re required to have four credits, and you’ve only got two so far.
M: Oh, boy. Well, OK, that shouldn’t be too hard. Maybe I should take golf—that is offered in the spring, right?
W: Golf? Uh…yes, it is. Do you play?
M: Not very well, no. I’ve only played a couple of times, but I need to do better than that. My boss plays golf and he’s always talking about it. It would be nice to know what he’s talking about!
W: Then you’d better take golf. You’ve got to play golf with your boss!
M: OK, OK, you talked me into it! Hey, thanks for your time. I appreciate your help, and I’ll get out of your way now.
W: Glad to help, Sean. Good luck with registration!
