2.190. Bullying (欺凌弱小) is a big problem that affects lots of kids. Three-quarters of all kids say they have been bullied or teased. Being bullied can make kids feel really bad. The stress of dealing with bullies can make kids feel sick. Bullying can make kids not want to play outside or go to school. It’s hard to keep your mind on schoolwork when you’re worried about how you’re going to deal with the bully near your locker. Bullying bothers everyone—and not just the kids who are getting picked on. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to more violence and more stress for everyone. Some bullies are looking for attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important. When they pick on someone else, it can make them feel big and powerful. Sometimes bullies know that what they are doing or saying hurts other people. But other bullies may not really know how hurtful their actions can be. Most bullies don’t understand or care about the feelings of others. Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. They might pick on kids who get upset easily or who have trouble sticking up for themselves. Sometimes bullies pick on someone who is smarter than they are or different from them in some way. Sometimes bullies just pick on a kid for no reason at all.

Directions:In this section, there is one passage followed by a summary. Read the passage carefully and complete the summary below by choosing no more than three words from the passage. Remember to write the answers on the Answer Sheet. Questions 1-5 are based on the following passage. The City of the Future What will city life be like in the future? Some people think that life in the cities is going to be horrible. They predict that cities will become more and more crowded. As the number of people increases, there will be less space for each person. This overcrowding will cause other problems—more crime, dirtier streets, and worse problems with traffic than we have now. How will people find enough drinking water, energy (such as gas and electricity), and housing? Because life will be hard, people who live in cities will worry more, and they may become sick. For these reasons, some say that nobody will want to live in urban areas. How can we solve such problems as overcrowding, crime, and traffic? In some cities, thousands of people are already sleeping in the streets because there is so little suitable housing—and because rents are so high. The crime rate isn’t going down. Instead, it is increasing so fast that many people are afraid to go out at night. Traffic is also getting worse. More and more often, traffic jams are so bad that cars don’t move at all for several blocks. These urban problems have been getting worse, not better, so many people see no hope for the future of the city. Los Angeles, California, for instance, has no subway system and the buses are slow. Instead, most commuters drive many miles from their homes to work. Many of these drivers spend several hours each day on busy freeways. New York, by contrast, has a mass transit system—buses, commuter trains, and subways. Because the public transportation is crowded and dirty, however, many people drive private cars, and the traffic jams are worse than in Los Angeles. On the other hand, some cities have clean, fast, and pleasant public transportation systems. In Paris, France, and Toronto, Canada, for example, anyone can use mass transit to move quickly from one part of the city to another. The disadvantages of any modern city are not unique to that city—that is, cities all over the world have to solve the problems of traffic jams, crime, housing, energy, drinking water, and overcrowding. Yet many cities have found answers to one or more of these difficulties. Some European cities, such as Stockholm, Sweden, or London, England, have planned communities that provide people with apartments, jobs, shopping centers, green space, entertainment, and transportation. Many U.S. cities are rebuilding their downtown areas. Urban planners can learn from one another. They can try solutions that have been successful in other parts of the world. Summary: Some people think that life in the cities is going to be horrible. They say that cities will become more and more crowded and many other problems will be caused by this 1 Due to the hard life, people do not want to live in 2 These urban problems such as overcrowding, crime and traffic have been getting worse, so many people 3 for the future of the city. However, these disadvantages of any modern city are not unique to that city. All the cities all over the world must solve the problems and fortunately, many of them have found answers to one or more of these difficulties. For example, 4 or London has planned communities providing people with apartments, jobs and so on. Besides, many U. S. cities 5 In a word, solutions that have been successful in a place should be adopted and tried in another place.

1.overcrowding 文章第一段第五句提到“This overcrowding will cause other problems - more crime, dirtier streets, and worse problems with traffic than we have now”,题目为原文的被动语态表述,因此答案为overcrowding。
2.urban areas 文章第一段最后两句提到“Because life will be hard, people who live in cities will worry more, and they may become sick. For these reasons, some say that nobody will want to live in urban areas”,即,由于生活的艰辛,没有人愿意生活在市内。
3.see no hope 文章第二段最后一句提到“These urban problems have been getting worse, not better, so many people see no hope for the future of the city”,因此答案为see no hope。
4.Stockholm 文章最后一段第三句提到“Some European cities, such as Stockholm, Sweden, or London, England, have planned communities that provide people with apartments, jobs, shopping centers, green space, entertainment, and transportation”,句中Stockholm与London并列,因此答案为Stockholm。
倒数第三句提到:“Many U. S. cities are rebuilding their downtown areas”,同时考虑到答案不能超过三个词,可知答案为rebuild downtown areas。

Text l How,when and where death happens has changed over the past century. As late as 1990 half of deaths worldwide were caused by chronic diseases;in 2015 the share was two-thirds.Most deaths in rich countries follow years of uneven deterioration.Roughly two-thirds happen in a hospital or nursing home. They often come after a ctimax of desperate treatment.Such passionate intervention can be agonising for all concerned. These medicalised deaths do not seem to be what people want.Polls find that most people in good health hope that, when the time comes, they will die at home. They want to die free from pain,at peace, and surrounded by loved ones for whom they are not a burden. But some deaths are unavoidably miserable. Not everyone will be in a condition to toast death's imminence with champagne,as Anton Chekhov did. What people say they will want while they are well may change as the end nears.Dying at home is less appealing if all the medical kit is at the hospital.A treatment that is unbearable in the imagination can seem like the lesser of two evils when the alternative is death. Some patients will want to fight until all hope is lost. But too often patients receive drastic treatment in spite of their dying wishes~by default, when doctors do"everything possible",as they have been trained to,without talking through people's preferences or ensuring that the prediction is clearly understood. The legalisation of doctor-assisted dying has been called for,so that mentally fit, terminally ill patients can be helped to end their lives if that is their wish. But the right to die is just one part of better care at the end of life. The evidence suggests that most people want this option, but that few would,in the end, choose to exercise it.To give people the death they say they want, medicine should take some simple steps.More palliative care is needed.Providing it earlier in the course of advanced cancer alongside the usual treatments turns out not only to reduce suffering, but to prolong life, too. Most doctors enter medicine to help people delay death, not to talk about its inevitability. But talk they must.Medicare,America's public health scheme for the over-65s,has recently started paying doctors for in-depth conversations with terminally ill patients;other national health-care systems, and insurers, should follow.Cost is not an obstacle, since informed, engaged patients will be less likely to want pointless procedures.Fewer doctors may be sued,as poor communication is a common theme in malpractice claims.
As people face dying, medicalised deaths would_____.

    A.arouse more of their curiosity
    B.incur more of their criticism
    C.raise more of their suspicion
    D.receive more of their support

    The State of Marriage Today

Is there something seriously wrong with marriage today?During the past 50 years, the rate of divorce in
the United States has exploded:almost 50% of marriages end in divorce now,and the evidence suggests it is
going to get worse. If this trend continues,it will lead to the breakup of the family, according to a spokesper-

marry at least four times ,and extramarital(婚外的)affairs will be even more common than they are now.
But what are the reasons for this ,and is the picture really so gloomy(阴暗的)?The answer to the first
question is really quite simple:marriage is no longer the necessity it once was.The institution of marriage has
been based for years partly on economic need.Women used to be economically dependent on their
husbands一as they usually didn't have jobs outside the home. But with the rising number of women in well-
paying jobs, this is no longer the case,so they don't feel that they need to stay in a failing marriage.
In answer to the second question , the outlook may not be as pessimistic(悲观的)as it seems. While the
rate of divorce has risen;the rate of couples marrying has never actually fallen very much,so marriage is still
quite popular. In addition to this, many couples now simply live together and don't bother to marry. These
couples are effectively married, but they do not appear in either the marriage or divorce statistics. In fact,
more than 50%of first marriages survive.
So is marriage really an outdated institution? The fact that most people still get married indicates that it
isn't. And it is also true that married couples have a healthier life than single people:they suffer less from
stress and its consequences, such as heart problems, and married men generally consider themselves more
contented than their single counterparts. Perhaps the key is to find out what makes a successful marriage and
apply it to all of our relationships!

How do most men feel in their marriage life?
A:They feel much stronger than before.
B:They don't feel as lonely as before.
    C:They suffer more than before.
D:They feel more satisfied than being single.

由段中的“it is going to get worse”可知选D。
故选A。
故选A。
    由第四段中的“consider themselves more contented than...”
