Passage One
Early in November 1965, New York was blacked out by an electricity failure (停电). The Mayor promised that it would not happen again. Pessimists (悲观主义者) were certain that it would happen again within five years. In July 1977, there was a repeat performance which produced a serious disorder throughout the city. At that time the city was in one of its worst heat waves.
In 1965, there was little crime during the darkness, and fewer than a hundred people were arrested. In 1977, hundreds of stores were broken into and looted (劫掠). Nearly 4,000 people were arrested but far more disappeared into the darkness of the night. The number of policeman available was far from enough and some looters even carry guns.
Hospitals had to treat hundreds of people cut by glass from shop windows. Banks and most business remained closed the next day. The blackout started at 9:30 P.M., when lightning hit and knocked out supply cables. Many stores were thus caught by surprise. For twenty-four hours, New York realized how helpless it was without electricity.
31. According to the first paragraph, who were right: the authorities or the pessimists?
A. The authorities.
B. The pessimists.
C. Both.
D. Neither.

Passage One
Wild and farm birds often get a flu virus. Yet they usually are able to carry the virus without getting sick.
In 1997 six people in Hong Kong died of a different kind of bird flu virus. It is called the h-five-n-one virus. The Hong Kong government quickly ordered the killing of all farm birds there. That stopped the spread of h-five-n-one to people in Hong Kong.
Yet the virus bad already spread to other parts of Asia. It was found in 16 countries between 2003 and 2006.
The h-five-n-one virus first appeared in Africa. This raised many concerns about the spread of the disease. Scientists do not know exactly how bird flu came to Africa. At first, they thought wild birds were to blame. Now, officials with the U. N. Food and Agriculture Organization believe the main cause is trade in farm birds.
The bird flu virus is found in the waste and liquids of infected birds. The virus spreads when healthy birds or people touch sick birds or nay infected (被感染了的) part of sick birds. Right now, the virus is not spreading among person to person. But the virus could change and start spreading among people. Health officials believe that it is even more possible now that bird flu has spread in Africa, and that is why international organizations are working so hard to stop its spread.
The best way to stop the spread of bird flu is to kill all the chickens in an area where bird flu has been discovered. More than 145 000 chickens have been killed in Nigeria since bird fin was first found one year ago.

Part II Reading Comprehension (40 points) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions or statements. Choose the best answer to each question or decide T/F for each statement. Passage One People often say that the Englishman's home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important and personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather than flats, and many people own their homes. This means that they can make them personal, and change them in any way they like- Most houses have a garden, even if it is a small one, and the garden is usually loved. The house and the garden are the private space of a person. In a crowded city a person knows that he or she has a private space which is only for him or herself and for invited friends. People usually like to mark their space. If you are on the beach you may have spread your towels around you; on the train you may have put your coat or small bag on the seat beside you; in a library you may spread your books around you. Once I was travelling on a train to London. I was in a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man opposite to me had his briefcase on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was unhappy. I thought he thought that he owned the whole table. I had been reading a book about nonverbal communication, so I took various papers out of my bag and put them on his case! When I did this he suddenly became angry and his eyes nearly popped out of his head. I had taken up his space! A few minutes later I took my papers off in order to read them. He immediately moved his case to his side of the table.

Write an essay with the title “Reading Books in Printed Form. or on Computer” in which you should
1) analyze the strong points and weak points of each one, and
2) tell your own preference and your reasons.
You should write 160—200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.(20 points)
Reading Books in Printed Form. or on Computer
The popularization of computer has made it possible to read books on computer. With it, there is much discussion about whether e-books will replace traditional print-on-paper books.
Some people say they like only e-books, which are quicker and more convenient to get and use. To get a needed book, one has to spend much time or money in searching for or buying it in bookstores, but one can just type in the title, author or other related information of the book to find it in minutes on internet. Sometimes one can even read the full content of a digitized book free of charge or instantly discuss about a book in an online forum. Moreover, a lot of information of books can be stored in a small compact disc, which is easy to take.
Other people, however, think printed books are still necessary. In the first place, too much time in front of the computer can cause eyestrain or increase radiation risks. Second, a printed book can be read at your convenience. One can read in bed before sleep or during a boring journey, without fussing with a computer.
In sum, since e-books and printed books have their respective advantages and can complement each other, I would like to combine the two ways to meet different needs. For quick reference, a digitized book will probably be useful. To appreciate a poem or a novel, I prefer the traditional way of reading on printed books.

Ⅳ. Reading Comprehension (60 points)
Directions: There are five reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by four questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Passage One
There was a nasty (肮脏的,卑鄙的) accident in our town not long ago, and I saw it happen. I was standing near a road which was under repair, not doing anything special—just watching the men at work. It was not far from the new motorway (高速公路) that runs past the town. It was an old road that used to be very busy—and dangerous before the motorway was built. Today, most cars use the new "superhighway" and the old road is pretty quiet, although cars do often come off the motorway into the town faster than they should.
Anyway, the men were repairing part of the road and there were signs up for at least 200 meters, telling everybody that the road was narrower than usual. Most of the drivers in both directions saw the signs and slowed down.
Then three cars came along close together, the third one moving at a very high speed. The first one pas sed the workmen and wanted to turn left. Meanwhile the third car came flying past the second one. The sec and car stopped. I think the driver knew something was going to happen. It did. The third car had no chance of stopping. Its driver braked (刹车) and pulled over to miss the first car and went right off the road.
There were four people in that car: a man, two women and a child. The child was a boy of nine. I read later that they were going shopping—just shopping, nothing more important than that. The driver was badly hurt. The little bay was hurt too. Both the women were killed immediately. One of them was the driver's wife and the other was the mother of the little boy. They never got to the shops.
36. The old road ______.
A. was very busy though there was a new motorway
B. was never very busy
C. was always very busy and dangerous
D. was very busy and dangerous before the construction of the new motorway
36.答案为D 根据文章第1段第4句It was an old road that used to be very busy—and danger Otis—before the motorway was built,我们可以断定D正确。
