3.Part ADirections: Read the following four texts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A,B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET I. (40 points)Text 1We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? .... When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?" "And Paul—why didn't pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it' s too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don' t really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You' re a lucky dog." That' s being friendly. But "lucky dog?" There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the "dog" bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that the doesn't think you deserve your luck."Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for," is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It' s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven' t got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone' s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.21. This passage is mainly about______.A) how to interpret what people sayB) what to do when you listen to others talkingC) how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with peopleD) why we go wrong with people sometimes

正确答案: 【参考答案】
It is true that a lot of children, from below 3 to high school, would like to spend time in watching a range of TV programs and videos. One of the most obvious reasons for this is that these are so attractive, vivid and touching our lives that the children who are curious cannot resist their temptation at all.
Some people, especially the parents, argue that this is very damaging. They probably begin by pointing out that their children who are limited in self-control and self-principle will easily take too much time in watching instead of being back to study after doing for a short while. In addition to this, it is well aware that the amount of violence and unhealthy pictures are filled with videos for some reasons. When children who are still simple watch too much amount without any correct guidance, some of them will easily break the laws in the realistic world by imitating the details of crimes.
However, others who disbelieve watching TV or video is bad claim that TV programs and the amount of videos can fully help children understand outside world or relax their stressful brains after intense study. Obviously, those who often watch TV have a wider range of knowledge and better understandings to our society than those who do not. All of this is beneficial to children’s growth and their future social life.
Overall, I would like to say that watching TV or videos are necessary for children who need knowledge and information, but the point is that parents must ensure their children not to watch too much or too long, and at the same time the Government should give a harsh warning to media with overuse of unhealthy contents.

Part B [A] Analyzing your own taste

    [B] Being cautious when experimenting

[C] Finding a model to follow

[D] Getting the final look absolutely right

    [E] Learning to be realistic

    [F] Making regular conscious choices

When we meet people for the first time, we often make decisions about them based entirely on how they look.

And, of course it’s something that works both ways, for we too are being judged on our appearance.

When we look good, we feel good, which in turn leads to a more confident and self-assured manner. People then pick up on this confidence and respond positively towards us,

Undoubtedly, it's what's inside that's important, but sometimes

we can send out the wrong signals simply by wearing inappropriate clothing or not spending enough time thinking about how others see us.

    41___________

For example, people often make the mistake of trying to look like someone else they’ve seen in a magazine, but this is usually a disaster as we all have our own characteristics.

Stand in front of a fulllength mirror and be honest with yourself about what you see.

There is no need to dwell on your faults—we all have good points and bad points—but think instead about the best way to emphasize the good ones.

    42___________

When selecting your clothes each day, think about who you’re likely to meet, where you’re going to be spending most of your time and what tasks you are likely to perform. Clearly,

some outfits will be more appropriate to different sorts of activity

and this will dictate your choice to an extent. However, there’s no need to abandon your individual taste completely. After all,

if you dress to please somebody else’s idea of what looks good, you may end up feeling uncomfortable and not quite yourself.

    43___________

But to know your own mind, you have to get to know yourself.

What do you truly feel good in? There are probably a few favourite items that you wear a lot—most people wear 20 per cent of their wardrobe 80 per cent of the time.

Look at these clothes and ask yourself what they have in common.

Are they neat and tidy, loose and flowing? Then look at the things hanging in your wardrobe that you don’t wear and ask yourself why.

Go through a few magazines and catalogues and mark the things that catch your eye. Is there a common theme?

    44___________

Some colors bring your natural colouring to life and others can give us a washed-out appearance. Try out new colours by all means,

but remember that dressing in bright colours when you really like subtle neutral tones,

or vice versa, will make you feel selfconscious and uncomfortable.

You know deep down where your own taste boundaries lie. And although it’s good to challenge those sometimes with new combinations or shades,

take care not to go too far all at once.

    45___________

So, you’ve chosen an outfit that matches your style,

your personality, your shape and your colouring. But does it fit? If something is too tight or too loose,

you won’t achieve the desired effect, and no matter what other qualities it has, it won’t improve your appearance or your confidence. Sometimes,

we buy things without thinking. Some people who dislike shopping grab the first thing they see,

or prefer to use mail-order or the Internet. In all cases, if it doesn’t fit perfectly, don’t buy it, because the finer details are just as important as the overall style.

Reappraising your image isn’t selfish because everyone who comes into contact with you will benefit. You’ll look better and you’ll feel a better person all round. And if in doubt, you only need to read Professor Albert Mehrabian’s book Silent Messages to remind yourself how important outward appearances are.

His research showed that the impact we make on each other depend 55 per cent on how we look and behave,

38 per cent on how we speak and only 7 per cent on what we actually say.

So, whatever stage you are at in your life, whatever role you play, isn’t it time you made the most of yourself?

Please discuss this view. 2. Why do you think lots of teachers pay much more attention to teaching students academic subjects than other aspects? 3. What’s your opinion of the primary functions of university education? Why do you think so?

    正确答案: 【参考答案】
There is no doubt that helping students find a job is one of the primary functions of university education, but universities do exist for other purposes such as improving students’ analytical skills and raising students’ moral standards.
A university education can be seen as a process of improving students’ analytical thinking. The variety of courses offered at university inspires students in various ways, therefore improving their analytical ability. For example, science courses such as math and biology help students develop a rational way of thinking whereas arts courses such as literature let students ponder over issues from a logical, multi-dimensional perspective; and courses in social sciences force students to recognize the ideas that have been traditionally assumed to be acceptable and unproblematic. With the development of these types of analytical thinking, graduates can face future challenges with more confidence and enthusiasm.
Also, university education is expected to improve students’ moral standards. This is rooted in universities? Belief that students’ awareness of responsibility towards their community and their country is of high importance. In this ever-degrading society and civilization, students are encouraged actively participate in improving the local community. A university that provides care and facilities for physically disadvantaged students may inspire the graduates to better handle situations in the future where they may have to interact with the disabled community. A successful university education is supposed to produce morally sound graduates, therefore increasing their employability.
In conclusion, university education not only helps students locate a decent job but will also develop other qualities such as enhancing their analytical skills and cultivating their hunger and spirit for life.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of buildings designed as works of art? 3. Recently, more and more people believe that a building should serve its purpose rather than looking beautiful. What’s your view?

    正确答案: 【参考答案】
Recently, more and more people believe that a building should serve its purpose rather than looking beautiful, whether the architects should worry about buildings as works of art has become an issue of controversy. Before presenting my opinion, I would like to probe into both sides of the debate.
Critics argue about the shortcomings of buildings designed as works of art. First of all, it needs a great sum of money to design beautiful buildings with extra decorations. Most people would like to have better infrastructures and recreational facilities rather than a better look. Secondly, the side effects brought by artistic designs also arouse people’s wide concern. They worry about the safety of buildings and they believe the steadiness is more essential. Last but not least, the appearance which is loved by the designers may not be accepted by everyone. Different people have discrepant views. It is easier said than done to settle a proposal satisfying everybody.
Supporters also claim that there are a large number of benefits following the special architectures. For one thing, we can hand down our cultural heritages by constructions. If we fail to build up symbols of our tradition, our descendants may forget it someday. For another thing, it’s also a good way to enhance the embellishment. There is no doubt that a good image of the city could successfully attract the world’s attention and powder .the dwellers with more opportunities. Also worth mentioning is that it can give us good feelings. Under such circumstance, people could work more efficiently and rest more comfortably.
Generally speaking, both of their views are rational. But personally, I side with the latter one.
Anyway, we don’t want to live in a world with the same buildings, the same colours and the same styles.

    正确答案: 【参考答案】
My name is... My registration number is... My topic is: Talk about Virtue.
We must uphold these core virtues including diligence, honesty, justice and responsibility. Traditionally, we Chinese admire the virtue of plain living and hard struggle. The vital importance is also placed on honesty and justice.
In my eyes, however, responsibility tops our priority. To shoulder some heavy responsibilities, we must keep a style of plain living and hard struggle. Responsibility also means honesty and justice. Everyone must assume a set of responsibilities. For example, we college students must take the responsibility for pursuing the impressive academic performance. But an army of students plant themselves in online games, an activity which compels them to shun huge responsibilities.
The virtue of responsibility is strongly associated with the “Eight Dos and Don’ts” moral campaign in full swing. Under this slogan, everyone must take on his/her own responsibilities and dedicate to his/her own position. Unquestionably, everyone must promote the socialist concept of honor and disgrace.

Practice 5 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

    正确答案: 【参考范文】
Today, more and more countries are experiencing a situation where their citizens are becoming heavier, less fit, and more unhealthy. The causes of this are clear, and there are many possible solutions. I shall look at the causes and a couple of possible solutions in this essay.
In almost all cases, the causes of increased weight are excessive eating and/or lack of exercise. If a person eats more calories than they use, they will certainly gain weight. If they do not exercise enough, this weight gain will become fat and too much fat results in health problems such as obesity and depression. The solutions, therefore, are simple enough—to convince people to consume fewer calories and/or exercise more.
This is easier said than done. Nowadays, more and more people have access to an increasing amount of food. Many people prefer food that is high in calories—perhaps because they think it tastes better or because it is faster and more convenient. One way of getting them to eat fewer calories can be to show them tastier dishes quickly prepared with lower calories.
Another solution is to have people do more exercise, so that the calories eaten are less of a problem. This could be done by reducing the cost of keeping fit and by creating better infrastructure. Financing sports and exercise facilities could be pricey, but there are long-term savings as well as benefits if people are healthier as a result. If every neighbourhood had easily accessible sports and exercise facilities, people would be able to use them much more often.
In conclusion, there are two main causes of weight increase and there are several possible solutions to tackle it.

    正确答案: 【参考答案】
My name is…My registration number is…My topic is: Will petty criminals get light punishment?
A new prosecution guideline was recently released. It says that if the petty criminals are minors, old or very poor, they may get light punishment. The public hold different attitudes towards this guideline.
Some people think that the regulation violates the principle that “everyone is equal before the law”. It also breaches the legal principle that citizens’ property is inviolable. But more people, me included, think that the new guideline represents the combination of leniency and severity, and it helps to promote social harmony. Although China is now richer than before, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. Therefore, social conflicts may arise due to the widening of such gaps and there is the possibility for those who lack basic social security to violate laws for survival. As a way to tackle these problems, the judicial system surely needs to do something for the disadvantaged group. The stipulation that people who have committed a small crime because of poverty will be exempted from prosecution is actually a kind of protection to the helpless from a legal perspective.
Furthermore, we all know that the objective of the judicial system is to prevent crimes rather than to punish wrongdoers. If one is severely punished because he steals bread for survival, the punishment may damage his whole life and lead him to commit more serious crimes. Severity does reflect justice and objectivity, but sometimes leniency can be more effective in saving the soul of an individual, because it will affect the hearts and minds of the petty criminals. It reflects tolerance and humanity and may play a more positive role in helping criminals make a fresh start.
In a word, if the law can show both leniency and severity at the same time, it will be the most

Practice 2 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: In countries where there is a high rate of unemployment, most pupils should be offered only primary education. However, others believe that higher education helps people find jobs. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion. You should write at least 250 words.

    正确答案: 【参考范文】
Being faced with a high rate of unemployment, many people begin to doubt the role or the purpose of receiving education, as high degree is not a stepping-stone to a successful career. Some people believe that a basic education can be enough to meet demands of job market and fulfill the requirements of a person's lifetime. However, others hold an opposite perspective on this issue. As far as I am concerned, unemployment has nothing to do with education itself, which is just not consistent with demands.
First of all, when it comes to basic education, it has at least obvious advantages: On the on hand, it is primary education that establishes the foundation of all subjects one should master, which can be frequently used in daily life. Moreover, only learning from the very basic level, one may have the chance to get to know something deeper in the future. On the other hand, and more importantly, through primary education, one can cultivate his desire and interest of learning. Without the interests in study, it is impossible for anyone to promote himself to higher levels. Like the foundation of a building, primary education is the foundation to build one's life education upon.
Furthermore, further education has its unique benefits: firstly, one can get the whole picture of a particular subject from higher education in college, which can benefit one's life constantly. Secondly, Uplifting one's life quality asks for two important elements: wealth and taste, which can be both gained from further education.. In other words, one can be a comprehensive person, not only learning his major, but also enjoying literature, art and music.
Lastly, it is a fantastic chance to meet and talk with people who share something in common in higher levels of education. Universities are like a stage or platform, on which people can consolidate the friendship they have for one another.

Write about the following topic: Some people think that the detailed criminal description on newspaper and TV has bad influences, so this kind of information should be restricted on the media. To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.

    正确答案: 【参考范文】
Whenever we turn on TV or read a newspaper, more often than not we can read a lengthy description of atrocious crime, which has become so-called features of modern media. I, as one of common readers, advocate the proposal that such reports should be strictly controlled, if no abolished.
Alarmingly, those criminal descriptions wield adverse influence on audience, especially fragile youngsters. Due to vulnerable mentality and lack of ample experience, upon contacting violent programmes, those kids are tempted to follow suit, thus breaking the law and such juvenile delinquencies are too often to be ignored. If this trend is out of control, then more teenagers will fall victim to those evil reports.
Moreover, numerous would-be criminals can learn skills of committing crimes from similar cases so the police find it more formidable to crack down on crimes efficiently. Although the original purpose of crime description is to warn people against offenses and teach them valuable lessons, the fact is that there, indeed, exists a discrepancy between what is desired and what is achieved. The latest research reveals that some habitual law-breakers have access to criminal skills and even the police’s detective methods from TV programmes and newspaper stories about crimes. By contrast, if we restrict strictly the programmes of tackling criminal cases, the ways employed by the police to combat crimes will be kept as the top secret, and it is out of the question to be disclosed to the public, especially those potential offenders.
Granted, criminal content, which is not a usual experience for commons, can enhance the TV rating substantially. Satisfying people’s curiosity and adding varieties to choices, those programmes can always attract more audience. As for me, however, the overwhelming detriments have overshadowed whatever benefits.
Overall, no matter what excuse media can find for detailed criminal description, there should be a strict regulation to limit such broadcasting. Government and relevant organizations should cooperate fully, guaranteeing healthier circumstances.

    Things We Know about TV

We keep reading that TV is bad for you.If this is true, how come the current generation of TV-addicted kids is much smarter than we are?In my home, the only people who can work the remote control are the children.
Perhaps TV does educate you.For example, you learn a useful medical fact:A person who has been shot always has time to speak an incomplete sentence before he dies.“The killer was…” (dies).
But I guess the biggest things we learn from TV can be regarded as"Life Skills".Bad things only happen on dark and stormy nights.Emotional breakdowns cause people to wander in the heavy rain without umbrellas. And contrary to what scientists say,the crack(霹雳)of lightning and the accompanying flash happen at exactly the same time, wherever you are.
Making use of what we learn from TV can improve our security.Consider these truths. If you are ever attacked by 20 bad guys, don't worry about being outnumbered. The criminals will hang back and take turns to approach you in ones and twos just so you can conveniently defeat them all.
TV also teaches us important information about escaping from danger. Watch and learn. If anyone is running after you down a passage, you will find that boxes have been conveniently placed near all the walls you need to jump over. If you are tall and handsome, you can run from any number of armed criminals, and every shot will miss you.
Be warned, however. If your name card says "henchman"(帮凶)and you are part of a group of plain-looking people trying' to catch a handsome individual,a single shot will kill you.
TV even teaches us about TV.Whenever anyone turns on a TV,it shows a news flash about someone they know. They then turn the box off immediately after that news item.

On TV what usually happens when a person turns it on?
A:The news shown is always about someone the person knows.
B:The person always turns off the TV when it's time for news.
C:The program shown is always about the importance of TV.
D:TV always shows news about famous people.

    答案:A

    Benefits of Playing Games

1.Why play games?Because they are fun,and have more benefits.Following the rules…planning your next move…acting as a team member…these are all"game"ideas that you will come across throughout your life.
2.Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek.Such games are entertaining and fun.But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating(合作).
3.Many children's games have a practical side.Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups.For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination(协调)needed in hunting.
4.Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all,the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition.People who are watching the event and waving flags know that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war,an Olympic win can mean so much.
5.Sports are also an event that unites people.Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it一some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne,a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. • 第16题:

Informal conversation is an important part of any business relationship. Before you start a discussion, however, make sure you understand which topics are suitable and which are considered taboos (禁忌) in a particular culture. Latin Americans enjoy sharing information about their local history, art, and customs. They expect questions about their family and are sure to show pictures of their children. Yon may feel flee to ask similar questions of your Latin American friends. The French think of conversation as an art form, and they enjoy the value of lively discussions as well as disagreements. For them, arguments can be interesting-and they can cover pretty much or any topic-as long as they occur in a respectful and intelligent (智慧的) manner.
In the United States, business people like to discuss a wide range of topics, including opinions about work, family, hobbies, and politics. In Japan, China, and Korea, however, people are much more private. They do not share much about their thoughts, feelings, or emotions because they feel that doing so might take away from the harmonious (和谐的) business relationship they’re trying to build. Middle Easterners are also private about their personal lives and family matters. It is considered rude, for example, to ask a businessman from Saudi Arabia about his wife or children.
As general rule, it’s best not to talk about politics or religion (宗教) with your business friends. This can get you into trouble, even in the United States, where people hold different views. In addition, discussing one’s salary is usually considered unsuitable. Sports is typically a friendly subject in most parts of the world, although be careful not to criticize a national sport. Instead, be friendly and praise your host’s team. What shouldn’t you do when talking about sports with colleagues from another country

    • A、Praising your own country’s sports.
    • B、Criticizing your own country’s sports.
    • C、Praising the sports of your colleagues’country.

◆Topic 10: Government’s Control of Violence in Media Questions for Reference: 1. What negative effects could be brought by the violence in films and on television to our society according to your observation? 2. Do you agree that the government’s control of the amount of violence in films and on television would limit our right of free speech? Why /Why not? 3. Some people put that it is in our best interest as a society for the government to censor broadcast media for violence. Do you think so? Why /Why not?

    正确答案: 【参考答案】
Whether the government should control the amount of violence in films and on television in order to decrease the violent crimes in society involves a conflict between our right of free speech and the duty of the government to protect its citizenry from potential harm. In my view, our societal interest in preventing the harm that exposure to violence produces takes precedence over the rights of individuals to broadcast this type of content.
First of all, I believe that exposure to violence does indeed cause similar behavior on the part of those who are exposed to it. Although we may not have conclusive scientific evidence of a cause effect relationship, ample anecdotal evidence establishes a significant correlation. Moreover, both common sense and our experiences with children inform us that people tend to mimic the behavior they are exposed to.
Secondly, I believe that violence is indeed harmful to a society. The harm it produces is, in my view, both palpable and profound. For the individual, it has a debasing impact on vital human relationships: for the society, it promotes a tendency toward antisocial behavior. Both outcomes, in turn, tear apart the social fabric that holds a society together.
Those who advocate unbridled individual expression might point out that the right of free speech is intrinsic to a democracy and necessary to its survival. Even so, this right is not absolute, nor is it the most critical element. In my assessment, the interests served by restricting violence in broadcast media are, on balance, more crucial to the survival of a society.
In sum, it is in our best interest as a society the government to censor broadcast media for violence. Exposure to such media content tends to harm society and its citizenry in ways that are worth preventing, even in light of the resulting infringement of our right of free expression.

Practice 6 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: Some people believe that these environmental problems are too big for individuals to deal with, while others think that individuals should take some action. Discuss both views and give your opinion. You should write at least 250 words.

    正确答案: 【参考范文】
Nowadays, environmental protection has become an urgent task, and who should take the responsibility or more responsibility? Some experts believe that as long as all the citizens take actions on to protect the environment, could the pollution problem be solved. On the contrary, others think that some problems are too big for citizens and the government should take the duty. Personally, the two sides can not be separated.
There are at least three things which are within individual’s reach: Firstly, developing green habits is contributing to the environment. It is a good one to conserve nonrenewable resources in daily routines. Not only should people make full use of the nonrenewable resources but also try to use some alternative ones. Secondly, it is fashionable for young people to follow the new trend called the low-carbon lifestyle. The idea of “low carbon” is to complete daily routines without discharging much waste. Lastly, people can also enhance the green awareness day by day as the society makes progress. If people have environmental-friendly values, they will protect the local surroundings without deliberate reminders.
Individuals, however, can not do everything as their capabilities are limited. Firstly, as for some huge constructions like dams or power stations, it is impossible for individuals to build or even think about them out of the restriction of funds and labors. Furthermore, individuals do not have force to stop illegal damages to the environment. Only if the legislative authorities draw up and put into practice relevant laws can citizens have rules to obey and can the destroyers be punished based on legal grounds. Lastly, citizens can only realize the importance on their own, but there is little chance to popularize these ideas to the public, so the media should make more effort by designing a theme TV program about eco-protection for the general public to have a full awareness of eco-protection.
As is mentioned above, protecting the local environment is the obligation for both individuals and the government. The government should make more efforts and build a platform on which citizens can have the chance to make some contributions.

◆Topic 8: Is education Losing its Value? Questions for reference: 1. Some people think that this increased access to education is devaluing degrees. What’s your point of view? 2. What can the degrees bring to people? 3. Do you think it’s necessary to have increased emphasis on degrees in our society? Why?

    正确答案: 【参考答案】
People have several arguments against the need for degrees. They say that having so many graduates devalues a degree. People lose respect for the degree holder. It is also claimed that education has become a rat race. Graduates have to compete for jobs even after years of studying.
Another point is that studying for such a long time leads to. learners becoming inflexible. They know a lot about one narrow subject, but are unable to apply their skills. Employers prefer more flexible and adaptable workers.
However, I feel strongly that this move to having more qualifications is a positive development.
In the past education was only for the rich and powerful. Now it is available to everyone, and this will have many advantages for the country and the individual. First of all, it is impossible to be overeducated. The more people are educated, the better the world will be, because people will be able to discuss and exchange ideas. A further point is that people with degrees have many more opportunities. They can take a wider variety of jobs and do what they enjoy doing, instead of being forced to take a job they dislike. Finally, a highly educated workforce is good for the economy of the country. It attracts foreign investment.
In conclusion, although there are undoubtedly some problems with increased levels of education, I feel strongly that the country can only progress if all its people are educated to the maximum of their ability.

What are the possible solutions to such a problem?

    正确答案: 【参考答案】
My name is...My registration number is...My topic is...The Retirement Age for Chinese.
It has been said that the government is discussing about extending the retirement age of employees. Although the authorities involved have ruled out the possibility of increasing the retirement age for the time being, it has still caused much concern and heated discussion.
Back in the 1980s, China’s major concern was its huge population, which had to be tackled first. But today, the aging of its population has become a pressing issue. As life expectancy increases with the help of higher social living and healthcare standards, more and more retired people are becoming healthier and still energetic enough to continue their work. For example, a 50-year-old man used to be regarded as aged a few decades ago, while he would more probably be considered a middle-aged person today. On the other hand, people in China retire earlier than in many other countries. In many of the western countries, the retirement age today is usually 65, or even beyond 65. But in China, the average men retire at the age of 60, and women at 55. Moreover, many workers retire earlier than the legal retirement age owning to preferential policies for women and workers in some of the heavy industries. The other thing which is worth our consideration is that the life expectancy of Chinese has been raised for a number of times over the past decades, and in many of the big cities in China, it has already reached 80 or over, so our pension scheme is facing an increasingly heavy pressure. Taking into consideration of the above-mentioned situation and some other factors, many people think that the retirement age for Chinese workers should and can be extended.
However, adjusting the social security system is a big issue, which has to be done with caution and discretion. The government should encourage a thorough public discussion on the issue and strike the right balance between the pros and cons before making the decision.

    问答题
Some people think that parents should plan their children's leisure time carefully. Others believe that children should decide for themselves how to spend their free time. Which opinion do you agree? Write a composition of about 400 words to state your view.

    正确答案:
Childhood is a decisive period in the process of one's growth. Therefore, many people think that parents should carefully plan not only their children's school education but also their spare time. Other people, however, argue that children should have the freedom to plan their own extracurricular life. On balance, I would side with those parents who respect children's freedom and independence.
If children have the freedom to make decisions on how to spend their spare time and develop their interests, they will gradually form a sense of responsibility and become more capable in the world. Take myself as a good example. My parents are like good teachers and helpful friends in my life. As I remember, they never excessively interfered with my life and always left enough freedom to me so that I could embark upon what I liked to do in my spare time. They quite understood that my weekdays were occupied with a heavy workload, and that only in my spare time I could have a change of pace. Meanwhile, although mutual understanding and tolerance were an important part of my childhood life, in no way does it mean that they spoiled me. They were austere teachers when I made mistakes, and helpful friends when I came across difficulties. Owing to their understanding, tolerance, guidance, and above all, love, I have grown up to be a person of self-confidence, optimism, and independence, ready to meet any challenges in my life. Without the free family environment that my parents carefully designed for me, I wouldn't have lived such a happy life.
On the contrary, some parents expect too much of their children, depriving them of all their independence and freedom. These parents would rather sacrifice their children's interests and happiness for nothing but good scores, thus resulting in serious misunderstanding between parents and children. Some parents even went so far as to plan their children's schedule, filling every minute with study task. In this ease, children are deprived of happiness because they are bound hand and foot by endless homework, numerous exams and boring evening or weekend classes. Furthermore, having no freedom to plan their own life, these children are more likely to become introvert, heavily dependent on their parents when they grow up. This will definitely affect their growth. For one thing, since they have no opportunity to develop their independent thinking and explore their potential, they will find it very difficult to adjust themselves to the competitive society. For another, confining them in an ivory tower will make it hard for them to communicate with others. This will affect their career development in the future because the communication between people plays a major role in the workplace, and is one of the most important elements in achieving career success. Obviously, parents' excessive interference with children's after-school life, if carried to the extreme, can cause serious damage to both their happy childhood and their career in the future.
To sum up, I believe that parents should leave enough freedom and privacy to their children with a view to cultivating their character. As long as parents allow their children the necessary freedom accompanied by careful guidance, their children will grow up to be independent, responsible and successful.
