    Water Resources on the Earth

The second most important constituent(构成成分)of the biosphere(生物圈)is liquid water. This can only exist in a very narrow range of temperatures, since water freezes at 0℃and boils a 100℃.Life as we know it would only be possible on the surface of a planet which had temperature: somewhere within this narrow range.
The earth's supply of water probably remains fairly constant in quantity. The total quantity of water is not known very accurately, but it is about enough to cover the surface of the globe to a depth of about two and three-quarter kilometers. Most of it is in the form of the salt water of the oceans一about 97 percent. The rest is fresh. But three-quarters of this is in the form of ice at the poles and or mountains and cannot be used by living systems until melted.Of the remaining fraction, which h somewhat less than one percent of the whole. There is 10—20 times as much stored underground water as there is actually on the surface. There is also a tiny, but extremely important fraction of the water supply which is present as water vapour in the atmosphere.
Water vapour in the atmosphere is the channel through which the whole water circulation(循环) of the biosphere has to pass.Water evaporated(蒸发)from the surface of the oceans, from lakes and rivers and from moist(潮湿的)earth is added to it. From it the water comes out again as rain or snow, falling on either the sea or the land. There is,as might be expected, a more intensive evaporation per unit area over the sea and oceans than over the land, but there is more rainfall over the land than over the oceans and the balance is restored by the run off from the land in the form of rivers.

The word"fraction"in the second paragraph means________.
    A:a large area
    B:a very small amount
    C:an important system
    D:a major source of information

第二段中间提到淡水时,说到“three-quarters of this is in the form of ice at the poles and on mountains",即3/4的淡水以冰的形式存在于两极和高山中,后面提到剩余部分的淡水存在于地下,但占比少于1%,所以选项A正确。
    词义辫析题, fraction有“小部分”的意思,考虑到前面提到地球97%的水以海洋咸水的形式存在,剩下的3%则以冰的形式存在于两极和高山,余下的自然不多,所以选B。
第三段的最后一句说到“there is more rainfall over the land than over the oceans”,陆地的降雨比海洋要多,但没有提到河流和山脉的降雨比较,所以C正确。

Australia is the world's smallest continent and largest island, a relatively young nation established in an ancient land. Its development represents a triumph(胜利)over remoteness and a harsh landscape.

It is generally accepted that Australia's original inhabitants, the aboriginal(土著的)people, have lived on the continent for 40,000 to 60,000 years. They were also its sole(唯一的)human inhabitants until two centuries ago. Indonesian traders probably visited Australia's northwest but it was unknown to the rest of the world until the 1600s. A huge south land appeared on maps before 200 AD but its existence was not confirmed until the 17th century when Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch merchants ventured into Asia.

The first European settlement of the continent--by the British--began in 1788, on the site now occupied by Sydney, Australia's largest city. There were then about 1500 Europeans and an estimated 300,000 aboriginal people in Australia. The population has reached 2.25 million by 1881, 5.41 million by 1921 and 7.4 million by the end of World War II(1945). It increased sharply, partly because of a large postwar immigration program, and reached more than 17 million in 1991, despite a decline that began in the 1970s in the natural increase and net immigration. The rate of population increase in the 40 years after world war II, about two percent, has halved.

Australia is one of the most urbanized countries in the world, with about 70 percent of the population living in the 10 largest cities. Australians have a high standard of living by world standards. The flag of Australia is the only one to fly over a whole continent in the world. The small Union Jack represents the historical link with Britain, the largest star has six points for each of the states and one point for the territories, and the small stars form. the Southern Cross - a prominent of the southern hemisphere night sky.

    1. The passage is written to _____.

    A. present a general picture of Australia

    B. persuade people to travel in Australia

    C. tell people the history of Australia

    D. describe the characteristic of Australia

    A. Australia is a strange country

    B. it is not easy to find Australia

    C. Australia has contradictory(矛盾的)features

    D. Australia is a continent and a country as well

    3. Which statement about Australia's population can NOT be inferred? _____

    A. The population change is a gradual increase.

    B. The population increased rapidly for a time owing to the government's special policy.

    C. The rates of population increase in different periods varied.

    D. The rate of population increase before World War II was about one percent.

    4. The word urbanized means _____.

    A. of towns or cities

    B. of emergency

    C. of suburbs

    D. of the countryside

    5. Which of the following statements is NOT true? _____

    A. The large star on the flag of Australia has seven points.

    B. People were certain of Australia's existence before 200 AD because it had appeared on maps.

    C. Australia enjoy relatively high standard of living compared with people in other countries.

  • 第17题:

    Deforestation and Desertification(沙漠化)
The Sahel zone lies between the Sahara desert and the fertile savannahs(热带大草原)of northern Nigeria and South Sudan. The word sahel comes from Arabic and means marginal or transitional ,and this is a good description of the semi-arid(半干旱) lands, which occupy much of the Western African countries of Mail, Mauritania, Niger ,and Chad.
Unfortunately, over the last century the Sahara desert has steadily crept southwards eating into once productive Sahel lands. United Nations surveys show that over 70 percent of the dry land in agriculture use in Africa has deteriorate dover the last 30 years. Droughts have become more severe, the most recent lasting over twenty years in parts of the Sahel region. The same process of desertification is taking place across southern Africa as the Kalahari desert advances into Botswana and parts of South Africa.
One of the major causes of this desert advance is poor agricultural land use, driven by the pressures of increasing population. Overgrazing一 keeping too many farm animals on the land一means that grasses and other plants cannot recover, and scarce water supplies are exhausted. Over cultivation一 trying to grow too many crops on poor land一 results in the soil becoming even less fertile and drier, and beginning to break up. Soil erosion (侵蚀) follows, and the land turns into desert.
Another cause of desertification is loss of tree cover. Trees are cut down for use as fuel and to clear land for agricultural use. Tree roots help to bind the soil together, to conserve moisture, and to provide a habitat for her plants and animals. When trees are cut down, the soil begins to dry and loosen, wind and rain erosion increase, other plant species die, and eventually the fertile top soil may be almost entirely lost, leaving only bare rock and dust.
The effects of loss of topsoil and increased drought are irreversible. They are, however, preventable. Careful conservation of tree cover and sustainable agricultural land use have been shown to halt deterioration of soils and lessen the effects of shortage of rainfall. One project in Kita in south-west Malifunded by UNDP has involved local communities in sustainable management offorest, while at the same time providing a viable(有活力的)agricultural economy. This may be a model for similar projects in other West African countries.

Most of the fresh water on Earth________.
A:is in the form of ice at the poles and on mountains
    B:is stored underground
C:is found in rivers and lakes
    D:comes from the rain

    问答题
Practice 2 Today monocultures have increased dramatically worldwide, mainly through the geographical expansion of land devoted to single crops and year-to-year production of the same crop species on the same land. Available data indicate that the amount of crop diversity per unit of arable land has decreased and that croplands have shown a tendency toward concentration. There are political and economic forces influencing the trend to devote large areas to monoculture, and in fact such systems are rewarded by economies of scale and contribute significantly to the ability of national agricultures to serve international markets. The technologies allowing the shift toward monoculture were mechanization, the improvement of crop varieties, and the development of agrochemicals to fertilize crops and control weeds and pests. Government commodity policies these past several decades encouraged the acceptance and utilization of these technologies. As a result, farms today are fewer, larger, more specialized and more capital-intensive. At the regional level, increases in monoculture farming meant that the whole agricultural support infrastructure (i.e. research, extension, suppliers, storage, transport, markets, etc.) has become more specialized.
