Text 3 England's problematic vocational education system has been subjected to wave after wave of reform.Yet improving the quality of technical education has eluded governments of all colours.University technical colleges(UTCs)are only the latest example of a shiny innovation that ran on to the rocks.Seven UTCs have now announced they are closing their doors.UTCs were intendecl to provide quality vocational education, combining technical and academic learning, for young people from the age of 14.Despite the millions the government has invested in them, ihey have on the whole been plagued by poor GCSE results and an inability to attract sufficient numbers of young people.Several attempts to establish quality vocational eclucation from 14 have failed. The issues affecting UTCs provide an opportunity to revisit whether this merits continuing support. We should take it.Barely a year passes without a lament about the low status of vocational qualifications. These often fail to recognise the chicken and egg that holds vocational learning back. Its status will only improve when ii is not seen as the preserve of those who have been failed by the school system. But while its status is low, these are the only young people likely to try something unproven and untested. This dynamic means new institutions often replicate the problems of the old seconclary moderns.Young people who attend UTCs are more likely to be from poor backgrounds, have made poor progress in primary school, and have attended secondary schools rated poorly by Ofsted. They are children who have been failed by the school system. In this day and age, there is no such thing as a career that does not require functional literacy and numeracy.Yet drawing low-achieving children out of mixed-ability schooling at age 14 makes them less likely to get the decent GCSEs in maths and English that are so critical in the eyes of employers.Setting up alternative vocational institutions for 14-year-olds thus risks closing down future vocational options, rather than expanding them.Vocational education is often posited as an alternative for those who are not"academically minded",orten a code for those who have disengaged from school.Yet this is far more likely to be a symptom of poor teaching ancl a lack of adequate support rather than a young person's inability to engage with a broad pre-16 curriculum that includes both academic and applied learning.Selection by academic ability at age 11 is wrong. But so i.s backdoor selection by academic ability at 14.The rlght to experience an engaging curriculum and finish school with adequate levels of literacy and numeracy is best achieved by options at 16 not 14.This wili not solve everything;but it is a better basis for ensuring 16-year-olds have the skills they need to flourish in any job.
In the author's view, establishing alternative vocational institutions for 14-year-olds would_____

A.equip them with more vocational skills
    B.encourage their engagement in school
    C.restrict their future vocational choices
    D.discourage their academic learning

    Vision

Human vision like that of other primates(灵长目)has evolved in an arboreal(丛林)environment.______(46)
In the course of evolution, members of the primate line have acquired large eyes while the nose has shrunk.______ (47) Of mammals(哺乳动物)only humans and some primates enjoy color vision.______(48)Horses live in a single-color world.
Light visible to human eyes, however, occupies only a very narrow band in the whole electromagnetic spectrum(光谱).Ultraviolet rays(紫外线)are invisible to humans though ants and honeybees are sensitive to them.______(49)The world would look terribly different if human eyes were、 sensitive to infrared radiation(红外线).Then instead of the darkness of night,we would be able to move easily in a strange shadowless world.______(50)
But human eyes excel in other ways. They are in fact remarkably discerning in color gradation. The color sensitivity of normal human vision is rarely surpassed even by complicated technical devices.

    _________(50)
A:Humans have no direct perception of infrared rays.
B:In the dense complex world of a tropical forest,it is more important to see well than to develop an acute sense of smell.
C:That gives the eye a wilder view.
D:The red flag is black to the bull.
E:There are different mammals in tropical forest.
F: In this world, objects glowed with varying degrees of intensity.

选项C 是large eyes和nose has shrunk的结果。
Horses live in a single-color world并列,是另一个说明只有人和一些灵长类动物才能分辫颜色的例子。
The world would look terribly different if human eyes were sensitive to infrared radiation(红外线),所以A是最符合逻辑的。
前一句说(如果人类能看到红外线)we would be able to move easily in a strange shadowless world,选项F是对这个假设的世界进一步的描述。

Creating the Logistics Vision Nowadays, most companies are familiar with the idea of "mission statement"as an expression of setting a vision for the business. The mission statement seeks to define the pur-pose of the business, its boundaries and its aspirations. It is now common for organizations to have such statement for the business as a whole and for key constituent components. What some companies have found is that there can be significant benefits to defining the lo-gistics vision of the firm. The purpose of the logistics vision statement is to give a clear indication which business intends to build a position of advantage through closer customer relationship.Such state-ment is never easy to construct. There is always the danger that they will publish the ener-getic and encouraging declaration that give everyone a warm feeling but provide no guideline for action. Ideally the logistics vision should be built around the simple issue of"How do we intend to use logistics and supply chain management to create value for our customers?"To realize this idea will necessitate a detailed understanding of how customer value is created and deliv-ered in the market in which the business competes.Value chain analysis will be a fundamen-tal element in this investigation as will the definition of the core competencies and capabilities of the organization.Asking the question"What activities dowe excel in?"and"What is it that differentiates us from our competitors?"is the starting point for creating the logistics vision statement. Earlier,it was suggested that the three words"Better,Faster,Cheaper"summarizes the ways in which logistics vision statement can provide value for customers. The criterion for good logistics vision statement is that it should provide the road map for how these three goals are to be achieved. Questions: What kind of goals can mission statement fail to achieve?()
    A

Fail to provide realistic guidelines to guide the actions to achieve results.

    B

Fail to design a goal that everyone agrees.

    C

Fail to point out a good goal.

    College Night Owls(晚睡的人)Have Lower Grades

College students who are morning people tend to get better grades than those who are night owls,
according to University of North Texas researchers.
They had 824 undergraduate(大学本科生的)students complete a health survey that included questiom
about sleep habits and daytime functioning, and found that students who are morning people had higher grade
point averages(GPAs)than those who are night people.
"The finding that college students who are evening types have lower GPAs is a very important finding,
sure to make its way into undergraduate psychology texts in the near future, along with the research showing
that memory is improved by sleep,"study co-author Daniel J.Taylor said in a prepared statement.
"Further, these results suggest that it might be possible to improve academic performance by using
chronotherapy(时间疗法)to help students retrieve their biological clock to become morning types, "Taylor
    said.
The research was expected to be presented Monday at SLEEP,the annual meeting of the Associated
    Professional Sleep Societies,in Baltimore.
In other findings expected to be heard at the meeting,University of Colorado researchers found a
significant association between insomnia(失眠)and a decline in college students' academic performance.
    The study included 64 psychology,nursing and medical students,average age 27.4 years,who were
divided into two groups一low GPAs and high GPAs.
Among those with low GPAs ,69. 7 percent had trouble falling asleep ,53.1 percent experienced leg kicks or
twitches(痉挛)at night,65.6 percent reported waking at night and having trouble falling back to sleep, and
72.7 percent had difficulty concentrating during the day.
"In college students, the complaint of difficulty concentrating during the day continues to have a considerable
impact on their ability to succeed in the classroom,"study author Dr James F.Pagel said in a prepared
statement."This study showed that disordered sleep has significant harmful effects on a student's academic
    performance,including GPAs."

According to Dr Pagel, the academic performance of a student will be affected__________.
A:if he or she is not motivated
B:if he or she is troubled by disordered sleep
C:if he or she is a morning type
D:if he or she is a lazy person

    答案:B
由文章第二段中“students who are morning people had higher grade point averages (GPAs) than those who are night people”可知,第一个研究中显示,早起的学生比晚睡的学生的年级平均 成绩(GPAs)要高,这里的night people即“students who stay up late",故选A。
由文章第三段中Daniel J.Taylor的话“The finding...sure to make its way into undergraduate psychology texts in the near future”可知,Taylor先生相信他们的研究结果意义重大,肯定会成为 将来本科生的心理学教材内容,故选C。
由文章第四段中Taylor的话“these results suggest...by using chronotherapy to help students retrieve their biological clock...”

    A.inadequate financial support
    B.insufficient student enrollment
    C.overemphasis on vocational learning
    D.inability to academic teaching

B.正确,insufficient student enrollment是对②句an inability to attract sufficient numbers of young people的同义替换。

Just as the value of a telephone network increases with each new phone _____ to the system, so does the value of a computer system increase with each program that turns out.
    A

    adding

    B

    to have added

    C

    to add

    D

    added

本题使用just as…so的句型,意为“正如…也”。由于已经有了谓语动词increases,所以add只能用其非谓语形式,又因被修饰的名词phone与动词add之间是动宾关系,所以应用add的过去分词,表示被动的含义。
