2.Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and eachcourse which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student would probably attend four or five courses each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for a degree over a longer period of time. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree courses, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to perspective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.1. From the third paragraph, we may infer that_____.

[A] traditional cultural heritage is worthy of preservation

[B] the universal features shared by all cultures aren’t worthy of notice

[C] musicians pay more attention to the preservation of traditional music

[D] the more developed a culture, the more valuable the music it has fostered

Breakfast is very important. It- s one of the most important meals of the day. To build strong bodies and keep healthy, everyone should always eat a good breakfast. Eating the right food is needed for good health. We may have eggs, bread, milk, etc.for our breakfast.

Many fathers and mothers don-t get their children to eat breakfast because they don't have breakfast themselves. It-s bad for their health.

Without breakfast children may not grow as fast as they should and may not study and play as well in school in the morning as they could. They can be often ill, and when they're ill, it may take them longer to be in good health again than it takes children with good health habits.

Student participation(参与)in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student′s oral participation.Although there are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role(i.e.,listening and taking notes),many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions, and informal lectures. In graduate discussions the professor has a"manager"role and the students make presentations and lead discussions.,The students do the actual teaching in these discussions.
A professor′s teaching method is another factor(因素)that determines the degree and type of student participation. Some professors prefer to control discussion while others prefer to guide the class without controlling it.Many professors encourage students to question their ideas.Students who object to the professor′s point of view should be prepared to prove their positions.
In the teaching of science and mathematics, the controlling mode of instruction is generally traditional, with teachers presenting formal lectures and student staking notes. However, new educational trends have turned up in the humanities and social sciences in the past twenty years.Students in education, society, and history classes, for example, are often required to solve problems in groups, design projects, make presentations, and examine case studies.Since some college or university courses are"practical"rather than theoretical, they pay more attention to"doing"for themselves.

    A.has not changed much__________

资料:Did your child's brain shrink last summer? Probably not, but it may have shifted into reverse, according to a study by Dr. Harris Cooper, professor of psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The study found that when students return to school after a long summer vacation, they've lost one to three months worth of learning.
The decline is more detrimental for math than it is for reading. "All students lose math skills," says Cooper. It may be because community and home environments give kids more opportunities to practice reading than math. The study also found that income has an impact on how much a student loses or gains in reading. Middle-class children actually gained in reading over the summer, while lower-income students experienced losses. Cooper attributes this to the enrichment activities that many middle-class kids participate in over the summer, such as camp and trips.
Your kids don't have to spend the summer stuck in reverse. "Parents can help their kids retain educational skills," says Cooper. He suggests the following five tips to kick off a learning-filled summer.
    1. Keep lots of books around and make regular trips to the library. Most libraries schedule special summer events for kids. Sign up your family!
    2. Think about what your kids may be learning next year when you plan the family vacation. Talk with teachers to find out what they'll be covering in class. If it's a unit on the civil war for example, you may want to schedule a visit to Gettysburg. If it's geology, visit a national park.
    3. Keep math in mind. Since kids lose more math skills than anything else over the summer, try to do some special planning to find math-related activities. For example, if you can't decide whether to sign your child up for "Shakespeare's Theater" or "Math Magic" at the local community center, go with the math.
    4. Consider summer school or tutoring. Struggling kids can get a lot of different kinds of help from these programs. Summer school can also enrich and accelerate learning in areas where kids show a special interest.
    5. Call the curriculum coordinator in your child's school district, visit the school board office, or contact the schools of education at local colleges and universities to find out what educational programs will be offered in your area over the summer.
Remember to keep it fun! You don't want to sour your kids on learning during the summer break.

How dose income affect a student’s loses or gains in summer learning? ( )

A.Lower-income children experienced lose in math over the summer
B.Middle-class children gained in learning over the summer
C.Lower-income children gained in math over the summer
D.Middle-class children suffered lose in math over the summer

【关键词】income affect;loses or gains; summer learning
Middle-class children actually gained in reading over the summer, while lower-income students experienced losses.

Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a toss of marks.

Why Students Fail in Universities Traditionally Chinese believed that university education was the guarantee of a happy life, so every fall we can find many freshmen happily and hopefully enter the campus. But what is unknown is that many students fail in their tests and have to take make-up exams or even drop out. To solve the problem, we have to find the reasons. In my opinion, there are mainly three reasons to account for this tragedy.
Most students' failures can be attributed to their poor study ability due to problems in high school. High school should prepare students for university education, but currently it is doing everything but that. High school education is known to be test oriented, for students are engaged in memorizing texts and working at sample test papers. Because of this, students admitted to university come to school only with mechanical study habits, which cannot help students cope with university study. For example, many students in my class may be good in courses that rely on memory, but in courses that require personal judgment or group activity, they will invariably fail.
Even with good study ability, some students may still fail because of the negative influence from their families. The first kind of such influence is lack of money. Now most universities collect quite high tuition from students, so students from poor families are constantly worried by money problem. Another influence is family misfortune, the most common examples of which are illness and accident. If students are troubled by family problem, they won't be able to focus their mind on study, and naturally they will not survive in university.
There are also a small number of students who fail because of personal weakness. Some students have trouble in sustaining positive relationship with their classmates, and bad relation prevents them from enjoying university study. Some other students cannot resist various temptations in their life, such as movies, TV programs, computer games, and campus romance, and these may also prevent them from studying well.
From what are said above, we can conclude that different students fail for different reasons. Some fail because they lack proper study methods, some fail because they are distracted by family issues, and still some other students fail because they suffer from shortcomings in their personality. Therefore if we want to prevent academic failures, we should first identify the reasons why they are experiencing trouble in their study, and then help them in the most effective way. It can be hoped that we will all pull through the four years in university and make our dreams and happiness come true.
本题要回答的问题是why do some university students drop out of school,属于因果关系题。
