4.Our dream is the song of our soul. Life without one is reduced to a hollow existence. But life with a dream is filled with meaning and purpose. Most of us have a dream, or heart's desire. But the trouble is most of us have the on/off switch of our dream set to OFF. Whenever we say, I can’t, we set the switch to OFF. Whenever we believe we can, we set the switch to ON. Simple, isn't it? Just because I believe I can do something doesn't mean there won’t be any problems. But once I believe I can do it, I will seek solutions for every problem I stumble on. And since it is a law of life that we find what we look for, if I look for solutions, I will find them.Any worthy dream is a dream worthy of accomplishing. Once I realize I can do it, the next step is to make a commitment. As soon as we make a commitment, great power is released. What seemingly were insurmountable hurdles are now reduced to obstacles of laughable insignificance. But we won’t reach this stage until we decide to stop talking and start acting. Unless we commit ourselves, self-doubt will ferment and block our way.Our dreams don’t have to be grand to be great. An aunt of mine sold gloves in a department store for most of her life. Her dream was to be the friendliest and most helpful salesperson around. Year after year, the same customers would return and deliberately seek her out. She brightened everyone's day and touched the lives of thousands. Was her dream any less significant than that of aprominent person? Of course not. We all have the power to follow a dream that will make a difference to us and those we meet.No dream is too small; no dream is too big, so hold on to your dream. Langston Hughes tells why, Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. So,what are you waiting for? Follow your dream!(1)According to the author, dreams ___________.A、refer to dreams in our sleepB、refer to dreams in the daytimeC、gives meaning and purpose to our lifeD、enables life to be a hollow existence(2)What are the stages in following a dream?A、Setting the switch of our dream on, making a commitment, and releasing the power.B、Setting the switch of our dream on, committing ourselves, and following the dream.C、Believing we can do it, committing ourselves, and acting.D、Believing we can do it, acting and making a commitment.(3)What does the dream of the author's aunt illustrate?A、To illustrate we should commit ourselves and start acting.B、To illustrate our dreams don’t have to be grand to be great.C、To illustrate her dream was to be the friendliest and most helpful salesperson.D、To illustrate we all have the power to follow a dream.(4)Which of the following statements is NOT true?A、Whether the switch of your dream is ON or OFF is left entirely to yourself.B、If we believe we can do it, there won’t be any problems.C、We will find what we look for.D、The author's aunt's dream was not any less significant than that of a prominent person.(5)The passage mainly tells us that __________.A、a dream gives meaning and purpose to our life.B、if dreams die, life will become meaningless.C、we should follow our dream which will make a difference to us and other people.D、a worthy dream is a dream worthy of accomplishing.

  • 第10题:

    问答题
Directions: In this section, there is one passage followed by 5 questions. Read the passage carefully, then answer the questions in as few words as possible (not more than 10 words). Remember to write the answers on the Answer Sheet. Questions 1-5 are based on the following passage. If you were on a distant planet, and if you had instruments that could tell you the composition of Earth’s atmosphere, how would you know there was life on this planet?Water in the atmosphere would suggest there could be water on the surface, and as we all know water is considered crucial to life. But water would only suggest that life is possible. It wouldn’t prove it’s there. Carbon? That basic component of “life as we know it?” Not necessarily. A diamond is pure carbon, and it may be pretty, but it isn’t alive. What really sets Earth apart is nitrogen, which makes up 80 percent of the planet’s atmosphere. And it’s there only because there is abundant life on Earth, say scientists at the University of Southern California The report grew out of a class discussion two years ago in a course taught by Capone and Kenneth Nealson, professor of earth sciences. Students were asked to come up with different ideas about searching for life on other planets. What is a distinct “signature,” as Capone puts it, that would show there is life on another planet? That’s a question that has been kicked around in many quarters in recent decades, especially since all efforts to find some form of life, no matter whether on Mars or in the distant reaches of space, have failed. At least so far. The current effort to search for some evidence of life on Mars focuses primarily on the search for water, because it has long been believed that water, or at least some fluid, is necessary for the chemical processes that lead life to take place. But that’s probably the wrong approach, the USC group argues. “It’s hard to imagine life without water, but it’s easy to imagine water without life,” says Nealson, who was on the Mars team before moving to USC. But nitrogen would be a much clearer signature of life. Only about 2 percent to 3 percent of the Martian atmosphere is nitrogen. That’s just a trace, and it probably means there is no life on Mars today, and if there was in the past, it probably ended many, many years ago. But, the USC team adds quickly, that doesn’t mean there’s no life anywhere else in the universe. They don’t know where, of course, but they may have found a way to narrow down the search. Look first for nitrogen, then look for biological activity that should be there. So if life exists elsewhere, and is similar to life as we know it, there should be nitrogen, and that’s what we should be looking for first, the researchers say. If they don’t find nitrogen on Mars, Capone says, “that will probably bring us to the conclusion that there likely never was life on Mars.” But how about elsewhere? Could this technique be used to search for life in other solar systems? Maybe. It might be possible to detect a nitrogen-rich atmosphere around a planet orbiting another star, but not yet. Current instruments aren’t that sensitive. If they ever are, the search for life might be narrowed down to the most promising prospects, chiefly because of the presence of nitrogen. And won’t that be fun! Questions: 1.What can suggest life is possible but cannot be proved according to the author? 2.What is a clear “signature” of life on another planet according to Capone? 3.What is considered as a wrong way to search for evidence of life on Mars? 4.What can probably prove there is no life on Mars today based on the new theory? 5.Why is it impossible to use the new technique to search for life in other solar systems now?

    正确答案:
    1.Water. 根据文中第二段,水只能表明生命存在的可能性,但不能证实。
2.Nitrogen. / The presence of nitrogen. 文中第九段第一句话很明确地告诉我们nitrogen would be a much clearer signature of life。
    3.The search for water. 第七段最后一句话指出,在火星上通过搜索水来搜索生命的存在是不正确的。
4.The small amount (2% to 3%) of nitrogen in the Martian atmosphere . 文中第九段中提到火星上氮的含量很少可以表明目前火星上没有生命的存在。
    5.Because current instruments aren’t very sensitive. 文中第十四段指出,由于现在的设备还不是那么敏感,所以不能够用来在太阳系的其他星球上探测生命。

  • 第15题:

When we talk about intelligence we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows to do.

For example, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can do, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it all works out, but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right, he doesn’t feel ashamed that he failed, he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook in life, a special feeling about life, and a special way of how he fits into it.

If you look at children, you’ll see a great difference between what we call ”bright” children and “not bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amounts of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life—he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general

1、According to this passage, intelligence is the ability to______.

A、work by oneself do well in any

    B、situation

C、know what is right and wrong

D、adapt oneself to a new situation

2、In a new situation, an intelligent person ____________.

A、knows more about what might happen to him

    B、is well-prepared for his action

C、pays greater attention to the situation

    D、completely ignores himself

3、If an intelligent person failed, he would ________

    A、feel ashamed about the failure

    B、learn from his experiences

C、find out what he can’t do

    D、make sure what’s wrong with

    his outlook in life

    4、An intelligent child ________

    A、learns more about himself

B、shows interest in things around him

C、studies everything that may be interesting

    D、looks down upon unintelligent children

5、Why does an unintelligent child seem to have a wall between him and life in general?

A、Because he can hardly see the outside world.

B、Because life is far away from him.

C、Because he knows nothing about life in general.

D、Because he has little interest in things around himself.
